The Controls Engineer/Technologist is responsible for designing, programming, and commissioning advanced control systems to meet client and project specifications. This is a full-cycle role where you’ll work on everything from design and programming to on-site commissioning, making it an ideal opportunity for someone who thrives on technically challenging and rewarding work.
Key Responsibilities

Control System Design: Lead the design and layout of electrical control systems from concept to completion, ensuring they meet customer and project specifications.

Electrical Design: Develop detailed electrical schematics and layouts using tools such as AutoCAD or EPLAN while adhering to relevant standards, including UL508a and ISO 13849.

PLC Programming: Program and debug control logic for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), including Allen-Bradley, Siemens and Beckhoff systems, both from scratch and based on existing programs.

HMI Programming: Design and program Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) to create intuitive, user-friendly interfaces tailored to client needs.

Site Commissioning: Work as part of a team or independently oversee the commissioning of control systems at customer sites, ensuring seamless integration and optimal system performance.

Functional Specifications: Draft detailed functional specifications that guide the design and implementation of control systems.

Equipment Selection & Procurement: Evaluate and procure the necessary equipment for projects, ensuring functionality, quality, and cost-effectiveness.

Shop Floor Collaboration: Work closely with shop technicians to address production challenges and implement effective solutions.

Technical Guidance: Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and oversight to ensure the delivery of high-quality designs and programming.

Process Compliance: Ensure compliance with Altec’s processes, quality standards, and industry codes.

Documentation & Reporting: Maintain clear documentation for all control system designs, software programs, and installation procedures.

Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the refinement of engineering processes to enhance efficiency and product quality.
Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma of Technology in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or Industrial Engineering.

Minimum 2 years of experience in control system design, programming, and commissioning.

Proficiency in programming Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC platforms.

Experience with AutoCAD or EPLAN for electrical design.

Working knowledge of UL508a, NFPA, CSA, and ISO 13849 standards.

Willingness to travel significantly for project commissioning.
