Located in Toronto, the Art Gallery of Ontario is one of the largest art museums in North America, attracting approximately one million visitors annually. The AGO Collection of more than 120,000 works of art ranges from cutting-edge contemporary art to significant works by Indigenous and Canadian artists and European masterpieces.
We are currently seeking an Art Educator, French Language to join our School and Teacher Programs team. Under the direction of the Manager, School and Early Learning , the incumbent will be working with other staff, volunteers and interns, designing and facilitating school programs including in gallery and studio based, in both French and English languages that are engaging, innovative, child-centred, fun, accessible and equitable, as well as responsive to visitor needs and program objectives.
Delivers a range school programs for elementary and secondary school students that emphasize process and product equally, encouraging the development of critical thinking skills, decolonization, and personal creativity. Also delivers French Language tours to adult groups when required. Co-designs and delivers innovative professional development resources for teachers that are relevant and timely to the field of art education that connect with the AGO collection, and promote inquiry-based learning and reflective practice. Ensures that program delivery is responsive to teacher needs and clearly meets the program objectives.

What is this position responsible for?
- Co-develops and facilitates in-gallery student and teacher workshops both customized workshops for professional development and a roster of AGO initiated workshops that encourage students and educators to engage with the AGO collection through a range of relevant themes and activities that involve exploration, critical analysis and play in order to achieve increased understanding and appreciation of art as well as personal meaning making for students. Models best practices to ensure program delivery is responsive, inclusive and meets program objectives.
- Develops innovative and unique teaching resources that are AGO collection and exhibition based for students and teachers that support student learning in the classroom.
- Co-develops and facilitates gallery and/or studio-based workshops that encourage students and teachers to explore the theoretical, technical and creative side of art making. Ensures that the studio-based workshops address different learning styles, relevant themes and issues and reflect the AGO’s collection and temporary exhibitions. Works with the Chief Technician to ensure the safe and proper use of materials and equipment consistent with accepted standards and procedures
- Supports program evaluation as it informs the on-going development of student and teacher programs. Co-develops and revises student and teacher programs and resources as needed.
- Participates in training as required and stays current with the AGO collection and programming as well as with new developments in art education and learning theory. Participates in workshops, conferences and symposia as assigned.
- Performs other duties and projects as assigned
What are we looking for?
- Post-secondary studies in Education, Art Education, Fine Art, Museum Education, or Art History with some studio experience and/or equivalent life and work experience
- Demonstrated teaching experience (minimum 2 years) in formal and/or informal learning environments involving children and youth, as well as adults in both English and French Language
- Must be fluent in French, and able to deliver programs in French and English
- Demonstrated experience in program facilitation, for students and educators
- Sound knowledge of learning theories and teaching methodologies as well as various media, techniques and practices relevant to in-gallery and studio-based practices
- Knowledge of the Ontario curriculum as mandated by the Ministry of Education
- Commitment to lifelong learning and excellent customer service
- Ability to be flexible, adaptable, and self-reflective
- Demonstrated computer competency and keyboarding skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
