About the role

Job Description The Senior Payroll Clerk VI will review and processes payroll and all payroll-related forms for completeness and accuracy.

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement. What You'll Do

  • Reviews and processes end-to-end monthly and bi-weekly hourly payroll and all payroll-related tasks for completeness and accuracy. (e.g. Review New Hire information, payroll exceptions and adjustments, ROE, taxable benefits, pension and extended health/dental benefits etc.) in accordance with government statutes, collective agreements, and benefit contracts.
  • Import timecard information into ERP system; reviewing for completeness as deemed necessary.
  • Reviews and processes all special payments (terminations, wage increments, retroactive pay, etc.) as required and in accordance with current CRA rules.
  • Compiles and accurately processes payroll data such as garnishments, vacation time, union dues, pension, RRSP, benefits, and other deductions
  • Ensures all deductions are made as scheduled and in accordance with relevant collective agreements.
  • Creates and runs required internal management reports from the payroll system.
  • Calculates, prepares, and reports statutory remittances and voluntary payroll deductions in a timely manner and balance to the General Ledger.
  • Responsible for paystub sealing and distribution.
  • Prepares payroll distribution, benefit, and other journal entries and reconcile related payroll general ledger accounts.
  • Assists in the reconciliation, creation, and timely distribution of T4s/T4As, T2200 and TL2.
  • Maintains an accurate set of confidential employee files by sorting and filing copies (electronic or hard copy) of documents after each pay run in accordance with the company’s records retention policy.
  • Responds to employee, union, benefit carriers and government agencies regarding payroll inquiries.
  • Responsible for preparing timecards for upcoming pay period.
  • Assists other payroll clerks for vacation relief or during peak periods.
  • Performs other administrative duties, etc. as requested.
  • Provides training to other Payroll Clerks as required, including backup; reviewing the work during the training process.
  • Provides back-up relief to cover other payrolls.
  • Participates in required meetings providing input.
  • Participates and assists in implementation of new systems as required.
  • Performs other payroll and accounting related duties as assigned.
  • Prepares ad hoc reports as requested.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring

  • Completion of Grade 12 education, plus completion of Canadian Payroll Association’s Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) Certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years payroll experience using a computerized payroll program
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations including basic accounting knowledge is required.
  • Experience processing union payrolls (preferably in a multi union environment) including working and application knowledge of Collective Agreements
  • Ability to interpret government, agency, and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Experience working with ERP systems (e.g. JDE, Oracle) would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, and procedures employed in the preparation and processing of payrolls.
  • Intermediate level computer skills with ability to work with computer applications such as word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate both written and verbally by email, telephone or in person in a professional manner with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to maintain sustained attention to detail with high level of accuracy.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders confidentially, and to maintain and control confidential payroll information and records.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while dealing with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced working environment.
  • Ability to make decisions and work with limited supervision.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and contribute ideas to improving departmental operations and service to employees.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team, exercising strong interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of operational inter-dependence between Human Resources, finance and Payroll is an asset.

Pay: Starts at $5,518.00/month (rate increases to $6,007.00/month after the probation period) This is a unionized position and pay rate for this position are set out in the applicable collective bargaining agreement. The rate stated above is the starting rate for this position. It increases after the probationary period and continues to progress over the course of 12 months as per the collective agreement.
