Job Title: TSSA Chief Operating Engineer
Department: Production
Reporting to: Production Manager
Location: Johnstown, Ontario
Greenfield is looking for a “TSSA Chief Operating Engineer” to join our growing team. The Chief Operating Engineer will work as part of an overall team to monitor, analyze and optimize the Energy building, utilities and plant water systems operations. The main responsibilities are the safe operation of the Energy area, to provide technical support when required, overseeing the performance of the various water treatment systems including the care and maintenance of fire systems.
The Johnstown Plant produces 252,000,000 litres/year of fuel, industrial, and beverage grade ethanol from corn, using an integrated dry milling, batch fermentation and continuous distillation and evaporation process. Energy requirements are provided by a 1st Class Plant, generating 84,528 Kw and 135,000 kg/hr of steam at 900 kpa and 1100 kpa through an HRSG and industrial water tube boiler. Other energy-related equipment includes twin gas-fired rotary drum driers, 4 centrifuges, economizers, a Thermal Oxidizer, 4 compressors, 2 Micro Filters, 2 Reverse Osmosis Filtration systems, 2 Softener systems, waste water monitoring water.

Your Experience Should Include

High School Diploma

SOPEEC Operating Engineer Certificate (1st Class) with Technical Standards and Safety Authority

Knowledge of fire protection systems

Demonstrated equivalent in work experience

Experience operating steam boilers in a continuous process plant, in an industry such as beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical, petroleum, fertilizer, etc.

Experience with operation of water treatment systems.

Familiarity with relevant regulatory requirements. (TSSA)

Input on Capital and modifications for future expansion

Oversee operation and care of Plant grounds and buildings

Job Responsibilities
- Within area of responsibility, develop, promote, and positively support goals and objectives in the areas of Safety, Environment, Product Quality and Consistency, Customer Service, ISO compliance, ISCC compliance, Internal Supplier Relationships, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Participates positively in and supports compliance of FSMA, FSSC, and any other food and feed safety standard.
- Responsible for safe/efficient operation and maintenance of the onsite equipment which are subject to the Technical Safety and Standards Act (TSSA) and ensure that accurate record of matters that may affect the safe management, operation and maintenance are always made and maintained. (TO/HRSG system, TSSA regulations, Pressure relief valve changes, steam distribution, high pressure distillation, compressor and gas-fired hot air heaters).
- Direct supervision of the Operating Engineers as per their duties in relation to the equipment defined by the Technical Safety and Standards Act including delegation of associated work responsibilities, instruction and training new employees.
- Conduct routine performance evaluations of the Operating Engineers as per their duties in relation to the equipment defined by the Technical Safety and Standards Act to provide positive and constructive feedback. Responsible for managing development requirements and opportunities, in relation with the above performance evaluations.
- Communicates regularly with all Operating Engineers regarding operating requirements, operating and procedural changes etc.
- Authority to hire, dismiss, promote or demote any employees with duties as Stationary Engineer under the Chief Operating Engineer’s control or supervision.
- Visually inspects TSSA regulated equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions, need for repair, adjustment or lubrication and coordinated the required work.
- Authorize, approve and be responsible for all the maintenance, repairs or work performed with the above-mentioned equipment or in connection with that equipment.
- Responsible for the efficient operation of the river water treatment and process water systems.
- Responsible for the cooling tower efficient operations.
- Responsible for the Fire Suppression and Monitoring systems including testing and record keeping.
- Responsible for the Pressure Relief valve inventory and applicable TSSA requirements.
- Acts as the Company liaison with outside agencies (e.g. Fire Department, TSSA).
- Responsible for Pressure Vessel and Safety Valve maintenance and control in collaboration with the plant maintenance department.
- Responsible for Coordinating Contractors activities on site during Maintenance and/or Capital work which includes or impacts TSSA applicable equipment.
- Work closely with Production Manager, Maintenance Coordinator, Technical Services Manager and Quality Assurance personnel for safe and efficient operation of plant activities and plant shutdown.
- Other duties as assigned.
