Who we are
Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.
This unionized position is a part of our Legal Resources and Corporate Governance business unit and plays a critical role in managing a portfolio of electricity generation contracts, overseeing technical and commercial aspects, and supporting strategic initiatives that impact IESO’s contractual obligations and the broader Ontario electricity system.

What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:

Managing all facets of the Contract Management function, including but not limited to:
-
Manage and oversee a team of IESO staff to administer and manage all technical and commercial aspects of electricity storage and generation contracts to ensure compliance and address all associated contractual obligations.

Ensure a high level of supplier focus by developing and maintaining an excellent working relationships through day-to-day contact with the IESO’s contract counterparties, with the objective to solve problems and mitigate disputes.

Negotiate contracts ensuring rate payer value, benefiting the Ontario electricity system in general and consistent with the objectives and mandate of IESO.

Resolve contract conflicts and disputes balancing costs and risks to the ratepayer and contract counterparty expectations.

Project Management:
-
Design and establish new protocols, strategies and business processes related to management of contracts consistent with government directives, corporate policies, procedures and good industry practice.

Develop, allocate and manage budgets while coordinating resources and staff to produce deliverables on schedule
-
Issue Expert:
-
Provide strategic advice to senior management on electricity generation and natural gas supply issues, ensuring alignment with IESO’s objectives.

Represent IESO in external forums and industry organizations, contributing to policy and decision-making discussions.

Lead cross-functional teams and recommend improvements to contract management processes based on evolving technologies and industry practices.

Support procurement and contract development, resolve complex issues, and manage staff performance and development.

Key interactions
-
Internal: Engage with all levels of IESO staff, including direct reports, senior managers across departments (e.g., Legal, First Nation & Métis Relations, Corporate Services), the Executive Leadership Team, and the Board of Directors to align contract management strategies with organizational goals.

External: Collaborate with senior representatives from contract counterparties, vendors, suppliers, external legal counsel, technical consultants, energy sector businesses, and government officials (including Ministerial levels).

Sector Engagement: Represent the IESO in discussions with Ontario electricity agencies such as Hydro One, the Ontario Energy Board, and local distribution companies (LDCs), contributing to sector-wide initiatives and policy development.

Remain flexible and available to assist with other projects within the department or in other IESO departments.

Perform other duties or responsibilities as may be assigned.
Role Requirements

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
- Excellent oral, written, presentation skills and effectiveness in interpersonal relationships
- Strong negotiation skills with a focus on problem solving; demonstrated ability to work with contract counterparties in a challenging environment
- Ability to effectively present to the Board of Directors, Executive Leadership Team, Government and stakeholders
- Ability to communicate technical and non-technical information to staff, contract counterparties, senior management, and media
- Strong ability to review and write procedures and review reports on a technical level.
- Solid grounding in economic and technical aspects of electricity generation and can integrate this knowledge to make sound decisions with consideration to impact on IESO’s procurement/contract management practices, divisional and/or corporate objectives and in general the electricity system in the province
- Knowledge of how the IESO’s Administered Markets function and the IESO Market Rules
- The knowledge required for the job is normally acquired through the successful completion of a 4-year university education.
- The minimum level of experience for the incumbent to perform at a satisfactory level of proficiency is 10-12 years including the period of adjustment on the job itself
