Qualifications

INDIGENOUS APPLICANTS ARE PREFERRED. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field required (Indigenous studies, history, sociology, communications, journalism).
  • Master's degree in a field related to communications and/or social sciences and humanities is preferred.
  • Class 5 Drivers license is an asset.

EXPERIENCE:

  • At least two years of experience in university, community, government, Indigenous, private sector or professional administration working on some combination of communications, knowledge dissemination, research or program development is required.
  • Research experience is required; research with Indigenous communities and Indigenous methodologies is highly desirable.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of knowledge dissemination, marketing, outreach, networking, communications, programming, and publication activities is required.
  • Previous experience working with Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, or Indigenous communities/organizations is required.
  • Experience in social media and video conferencing is preferred.
  • Experience in writing and editing research proposals and grant applications is preferred.
  • Familiarity with SSHRC agency and grant funding opportunities is an asset.
  • Experience in publications management is an asset.
  • Experience in communication planning and preparing and delivering communication materials (print and digital).
  • Experience in event planning and execution.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Competencies with Indigenous cultural awareness, knowledge, and protocols are required.
  • Knowledge of Photoshop, Canva, InDesign, Drupal, Wordpress, and social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) and/or the ability to learn and adapt to new computer and web programs, and social media trends quickly required.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster strong community connections is required.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively required.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills required.
  • Superior organizational skills required.

Key responsibilities

  • Liaises as the coordination hub with Reconciliation Network project teams, University of Manitoba departments, external institutions, NCTR staff, NCTR community partners, NCTR partner institutions, universities, research institutes, governments, community organizations, academic and community-based researchers, students and public.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with Residential School Survivors and communities in support of Reconciliation Network.
  • Develops and maintains strong, collaborative partnerships with Reconciliation Network project teams including meeting and reporting regularly and supporting the project teams work.
  • May travel to urban and remote Indigenous communities by commercial/private plane and/or vehicle.
  • Works with the NCTR's Communications Officer to create communications strategy for Reconciliation Network work and activities.
  • Responds to inquiries on Reconciliation Network.
  • Works with the Research Manager to report to all stakeholders on Reconciliation Network activities including drafting materials and organizing meetings.
  • Creates and maintains email list related to Reconciliation Network.
  • Facilitates and coordinates the knowledge dissemination activities of the Reconciliation Network including offering training and support Reconciliation Network project team and maintaining research unit's web pages, drafting newsletters, blogs, podcasts, etc.
  • Supports Reconciliation Network outreach activities.
  • Assists with the development, preparation, and presentation of annual or official reports related to Reconciliation Network to funding agencies, key external stakeholders, and University leadership/administration.
  • Attends Research meetings and other NCTR meetings.
  • Assists in preparation of Reconciliation Network budgets and maintains budget records.
  • Supervises and assigns work to research staff for Reconciliation Network, assists in the hiring and training of research staff including completing and submitting appropriate paper to human resources.
  • Provides advice and assistance to other university departments and administrative unit in support of Reconciliation Network.
  • Interprets and implements research policies, procedures, and participates in planning of Reconciliation Network activities.
  • Keeps up to date on university policies, procedures, and requirements and development within the field of research.
  • Submits work plans, work reports, creates calendars and agendas related to Reconciliation Network.
  • Ensures the decisions of Research Manager and Academic and Research Director are administered effectively.
  • Provides research support to Reconciliation Network teams such as facilitating access to NCTR Archives.
  • Supports the development of grant applications for the Reconciliation Network as directed.
  • Drafts ethics submissions when needed: complete forms, ensure all information is provided and submit to appropriate board;
  • Assists Academic and Research Director and Research Manager in administering grants related to the Reconciliation Network: ensure ethics approvals, certificates have been obtained, ongoing reporting deadlines met, budgets and final reports submitted;
  • Coordinates activities between the Reconciliation Network project teams and the other units at the NCTR.
  • Develops a broad range of written materials related to the research of the Reconciliation Network, including reports, literature reviews, funding proposals, and policy briefs, both independently and in collaboration with the Academic and Research Director and the Research Manager and Reconciliation Network project teams; and
  • Provides advice to develop and enhance strategies to support research of Reconciliation Network.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position is 100% on-site. Hybrid and remote work options are not available for this role.
