Position Summary

The Operations Manager is responsible for the effective management and optimal deployment of tractor and trailer assets within the company fleet, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of logistics services to production plants and customers across the assigned region.

This role provides leadership to dispatchers and drivers, working in close collaboration with Customer Service Representatives (CSRs), Safety Specialists, and Maintenance Managers to ensure transportation operations are safe, reliable, efficient, and cost-effective.

The Operations Manager contributes directly to business performance, with success measured through key performance indicators (KPIs) related to customer satisfaction, regulatory compliance, safety performance, and cost per ton-mile delivered.

Reporting Structure

The Operations Manager exercises direct supervision over company drivers and dispatch personnel within the region and provides indirect oversight of third-party contractors and transportation-related vendor relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision of dispatchers and drivers.
  • Direct and coordinate fleet dispatch, routing, and positioning to optimize service delivery.
  • Oversee fleet maintenance planning and collaborate with the maintenance team to ensure equipment availability.
  • Ensure consistent enforcement of company policies, procedures, and operational standards.
  • Monitor operations to ensure compliance with internal policies, safety standards, and all applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by conducting safety audits, leading weekly / monthly safety meetings, and engaging employees through regular one-on-one discussions.
  • Support incident investigations in collaboration with the safety team and external agencies to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal stakeholders and external partners, including customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with all organizational and regulatory requirements governing transportation operations.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle registration and fleet records within designated systems.
  • Support capital expenditure (CapEx) planning by contributing to equipment business cases and procurement recommendations.
  • Oversee service delivery performance, including the review and approval of demurrage charges.
  • Coordinate and ensure completion of required driver training programs in collaboration with safety and dispatch teams.
  • Respond to and support emergency situations involving driver or fleet incidents.
  • Forecast transportation volumes and equipment requirements on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis, supporting business planning processes.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and support the implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Review monthly performance results and communicate risks and opportunities to the Regional Manager, including budget variances and revenue trends.

Qualifications

  • 3–4 years of management or supervisory experience in a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation, logistics, or dispatch operations.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable provincial and federal transportation regulations, including hours of service, Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), and cross-border compliance requirements.
  • Experience with cross-border operations, including customs and clearance protocols.
  • Demonstrated strengths in communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and team leadership.
  • Experience managing diverse teams, including employees and contractors.
  • Proficiency with fleet management, dispatch, and logistics systems; experience with JD Edwards is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage technology to improve operational efficiency.
