The Role

Has primary responsibility for leading and overseeing the organization's spiritual care program to improve the experience of persons served across the continuum of care within Seniors Services by engaging staff and the community served, driven by the Division’s mission, vision, and values.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive spiritual and emotional support to those we serve and their partners in care. Focuses on enhancing well-being by respecting and supporting a diverse array of spiritual beliefs and practices.
  • Works as part of an interdisciplinary team to create a caring, person-centered, home-like environment where people feel listened to and cared about.
  • Provides individualized and person-centered spiritual care and counselling.
  • Facilitates and coordinates inclusive spiritual services, holiday observations, rituals and ceremonies as requested.
  • As the divisional expert on spiritual care, provides advice, guidance, and recommendations to management and staff on leading practices.
  • Collaborates, supports, and coaches staff, volunteers, and students in training that supports spiritual and emotional care.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements standards, policies, and procedures, and provides
    leadership in program/service evaluation.
  • Delivers spiritual care programming including, but not limited to, one-to-ones, discussion groups, special interest groups, hymn signs, worship services; and support groups.
  • Maintains partnerships with other community faith groups and connects residents with the spiritual resources offered by their own faith group within the community as requested.
  • Ensures the spiritual care program is operated in compliance with legislation and other standards including Occupational Health and Safety Standards.
  • Coordinates the on-call system for community clergy to respond to urgent spiritual care when on vacation.
  • Provides education and consultations on ethical decision-making pertaining to care.
  • Co-chairs the Palliative Care Committee.
  • Completes spiritual needs assessments, progress notes, attendance, and annual reports, including spiritual care and palliative care statistics.
  • Submits and presents reports and funding requests annually, to stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Has a p-card to purchase supplies for the spiritual care program.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge and skills are normally acquired through a Master of Divinity or equivalent, plus graduate and/or post-graduate courses in Psychology, Sociology, and Family Systems and progressively responsible related experience working in a long-term care home with familiarity with psycho-geriatrics, cognitive impairment, chronic illness, the health care system, and community resources.
  • Experience providing multi-faith spiritual care services.
  • Knowledge of theology and spirituality, and human dynamics in individual, family, and community relationships. Familiarity with the basic tenets of all religious and spiritual orientations.
  • Must have training with, and be a member of the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC). Must be in good standing with and endorsed by own faith group to function as a provider of spiritual and religious care.
  • Leadership, human relations, presentation, facilitation, public relations, and communications skills to
    interact with staff, residents, volunteers, families, outside agencies, and the public. Ability to distill complex information into clear, meaningful messages; develop relations within the community; and participate as an effective team member.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with policies, procedures, and legislation (e.g., long term care, privacy, health care consent, health and safety).
  • Computer skills with ability to use software such as Microsoft Office, and a clinical documentation system.
  • Ability to write clear, concise resident progress notes, minutes, reports, sermons, memorial services, workplans, newsletters, documentation, and correspondence. Ability to read and understand journals, books, newsletters, correspondence, resident charts, and research papers.
  • Must provide an acceptable vulnerable sector police records check.
  • Must have a tuberculosis test and all required immunizations.
  • Ability to travel within Waterloo Region.
  • Ability to support and demonstrate the Region’s values.
