Location

This position is required to work in person at City Hall, 426 Brant Street, Burlington, Ontario. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for inspection on construction projects, as well as the collection of topographic data for the design of capital projects.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Inspect and approve standards of work and materials for construction of sewers, roads, culverts, bridges, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, demolitions, creek improvements, street lighting and other special projects.
  • Attend the site on a regular basis. Refuse substandard work and materials. Recommend stop work orders when necessary to enforce standards and contract, and safety concerns.
  • Co-ordinate with consulting engineers for testing of other materials, interpret results and take appropriate action.
  • Take responsibility for good record keeping on projects, including daily reports, change work orders and field drawings. Must monitor and schedule own time to best suit the needs of the projects you are currently working on.
  • Ensure proper safety for pedestrians and vehicle traffic through and around projects. Responsible, with contractor, for safety on the site.
  • Approve and/or initiate changes of minor consequence on projects. Recommend solutions to more serious or involved field problems to the other members of the project team.
  • Attend site meetings, participate in the discussion, solve problems.
  • Promote good public relations in the field. Occasionally meet with elected officials on specific field problems.
  • Monitor cost of construction in field and control tender quantities with team leader and contract administration staff.
  • Monitor and co-ordinate work performed by other agencies, such as Region of Halton, Burlington Hydro, Bell Canada and Halton Region Conservation Authority, Cogeco and other specialized agencies, and may carry out inspections on their behalf. Reject substandard work done for or by the above agencies.
  • Complete construction layout or check layout done by contractor for accuracy and compliance with contract drawings.
  • Complete pre-engineering surveys using electronic data collecting survey equipment and survey level.
  • Complete ‘as-built’ surveys, pre-construction and construction layouts and establish benchmarks.
  • Collect sewer and watermain location and elevation information.
  • Operate, test, and adjust electronic data collecting survey equipment.
  • Download survey data from the data collector to computer software, closing and adjusting the traverse, adjusting and editing data to verify the final drawing.
  • Inspect and document infrastructure condition during the preparation of resurfacing design, preparation of ‘as-constructed’ drawings and miscellaneous designs.

Requirements

You have a degree/diploma in civil engineering or surveying combined with more than 4 years of experience in roadway inspections or surveying. You will be required to be outside, surveying rough ground or inspecting sites under construction.

To be successful in this role, your technical skills are complimented by strong problem solving and decision-making skills. You build rapport easily with others, and handle conflict tactfully. Your ability to pay attention to details and stay organized in a busy work environment is an asset.

A valid G-Class driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions and an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).
