The Tank Inspector is responsible for inspecting and assessing the condition and integrity of above-ground and underground storage tanks in compliance with industry standards such as API 653. The role involves performing non-destructive testing (NDT), evaluating tank components, and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. The Tank Inspector plays a critical role in identifying potential issues, providing maintenance recommendations, and ensuring the safe operation of storage tanks across various industries.
Responsibilities
- Conducts comprehensive inspections of storage tanks, including tank walls, floors, roofs, and nozzles, in accordance with API 653 standards and other applicable codes.
- Performs non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and Visual Testing (VT) to detect structural defects, corrosion, and other anomalies.
- Evaluates the structural integrity of tank components and identify issues such as cracks, thinning walls, pitting, and other forms of wear or damage.
- Monitors and assesses tank foundations and surrounding areas for settlement, cracks, or other signs of instability.
- Prepares detailed inspection reports, documenting findings, test results, and recommendations for repairs or maintenance.
- Works with engineers and maintenance teams to develop corrective action plans based on inspection results.
- Oversees and verifies the completion of repairs and modifications to ensure compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
- Ensures adherence to safety protocols during inspections, including confined space entry and hazardous material handling.
- Stays up to date with changes in industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to tank inspections.
- Conducts tank calibrations to ensure accurate volume measurements and operational efficiency.
- Provides guidance on the development of maintenance schedules to ensure long-term tank reliability and safety.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (required); technical or vocational training (preferred).
- Experience working with storage tanks in the oil and gas, chemical, or petrochemical industries.
- Preference will be given to candidates with certification as an API 653 Inspector or equivalent and/or NDT Certifications (MT, PT, UT) with experience inspecting above-ground storage tanks.
- Strong understanding of industry standards including API 653.
- Ability to interpret and apply technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering data.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and assess structural issues.
- Proficiency in preparing comprehensive reports and providing recommendations for repairs and maintenance.
- Familiarity with tank calibration methods and best practices for accurate volume measurements.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with engineering and maintenance teams.
- Willingness to travel to various inspection sites, often in challenging environments.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations, including confined space entry, hazardous materials, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
