About the Role
Stelco has an immediate opening for a Shift Manager – Operations in the Steelmaking department, at its Lake Erie Works facility in Nanticoke, Ontario, Canada. This position is responsible for all functions related to direct management of a well-trained unionized workforce, individual unit performance and compliance to all regulatory legislative requirements.

Provides Leadership to
- Directly: Production Bargaining Unit Personnel
- Indirectly: Steelmaking Shift Maintenance & Utilities Personnel
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Administration of the Stelco safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the Operating facility.
- Promotes safety by various means (safety contacts, safety tours, incident investigations and follow-up, MSDS and SJP/SOP review, equipment condition, etc.) and leads by example.
- Ensures adherence to all environmental control procedures and relevant codes and standards.
- Supervises hourly workforce and coordinates all administrative activities pertaining to that responsibility (i.e. performance reviews and related documentation, attendance and conduct administration etc.).
- Performs administrative activities such as scheduling and paying employees, completing maintenance and operating reports, conducting safety conversations, and compiling other reporting as required.
- Communicates, directs and facilitates the overall operation of the facility. Builds constructive relationships. Ensures accountability, engages employees, promotes teamwork and responsibility to improve employee morale. Requires strong leadership. Ensures consistent productivity and cost.
- Maintains an awareness of the condition of operating equipment. Troubleshoots equipment failures and arranges equipment repairs through assigned maintenance personnel. Maintains accurate production reporting and delay logs.
- Actively participates in recruitment screening and selection of prospective new hires.
- Establish performance goals and objectives with Area Manager. Report and address product quality issues on a shift basis.
Education/Experience/Qualifications
- College Diploma/University Degree in Engineering, Operations, Manufacturing, Material Science, or Business discipline or a combination of education and experience working in a unionized, manufacturing/industrial environment is preferred.
- Previous experience in steel manufacturing and heavy industrial is a strong asset
- 2+ years of supervisory or leadership experience
Job Skills and Knowledge
- Sound knowledge of electrical or mechanical maintenance practices and required skills
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal and leadership skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability and desire to work in a shop floor environment
- Proficient in MS Office
- An enthusiastic approach and ability to learn quickly and assume responsibility
- As a manager/supervisor of the company, qualified candidates for this role also must demonstrate the ability to manage change, communicate effectively, and lead high-performance teams.

- Fast-paced manufacturing environment for a high impact team
- The job is within a heavy industrial environment and you will be required to work within various areas of the facility
- Safe production is a core value of our organization. All work must be performed in accordance with established safety procedures and guidelines. This includes the mandatory use of company‑issued personal protective equipment such as hard hats, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators, flame‑resistant clothing, and safety footwear with metatarsal protection throughout the work shift
- Lake Erie facility operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year
- The position may require you to work overtime as needed
- A valid driver’s license and vehicle is required to work at this facility
