Job Description

The Toronto Star is seeking a Multimedia Assignment Editor to help drive our visual journalism across platforms. This role will be central to assigning, coordinating, and producing compelling photo, video, and multimedia storytelling that brings our journalism to life for readers and subscribers. This role falls within the Team Editor classification in the Star’s Editorial Department.

The Multimedia Assignment Editor will assign and manage daily and enterprise visual coverage, coordinating photographers, videographers, and freelancers to ensure strong, timely storytelling. This role requires excellent news judgment, the ability to balance breaking news with longer-term projects, and strong collaboration with reporters, editors, and producers to align visuals with newsroom priorities. The editor will also source material from agencies, institutions, social media, and the community, and must be comfortable contributing hands-on—shooting, editing, and supporting both field and studio production when needed.

Team editors can be re-assigned to any newsroom department across a variety of assignments and locations, depending on future business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assign and coordinate photo and video coverage for breaking news and enterprise stories.

  • Ensure field teams are well supported with clear direction and resources.

  • Source and vet third-party visuals, including user-generated content, with attention to accuracy, rights, and ethics.

  • Support live event and studio-based multimedia production.

  • Contribute to editing, packaging, and publishing across platforms.

  • Uphold the highest standards of accuracy, fairness, and ethical integrity in all visual content.

Qualifications

  • Strong newsroom experience in visual journalism (photo/video assignment, editing, or production).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments under deadline pressure.
  • Experience sourcing visuals from wire services, institutions, and social media.
  • Knowledge of photo and video editing tools and workflows.
  • Hands-on ability to shoot and produce professional-quality photo and video.
  • Superb news, photo and video judgment and a proven ability to shape compelling visual storytelling.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; collaborative mindset.
  • Understanding of legal, ethical, and rights-management issues in visual journalism.
  • Leadership qualities: problem-solving, decision-making, supporting and motivating colleagues.
  • Relentless attention to detail and deadlines.

Salary: $72,787.84- $100,872.66

This is a notice of vacancy under Article 8 of collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M. The hours of work for this position will vary according to the assignment but will all conform to a standard 35-hour work week as described under the collective agreement. This position will be located in Toronto.
