Employment type: Permanent Region: Lower Mainland
Hours of work: Full-time (37.5 hrs/wk) Flexible Work Role: Hybrid
Annual salary: $ 107,000.00 - 135,300.00
What you'll do
The Transmission Stations Division is preparing for several major projects, including the construction of new indoor and
outdoor substations and the expansion of existing sites across BC Hydro’s transmission system. Our work supports
sustainable growth and electrification throughout our province. We are currently seeking an Electrical Engineer specializing
in major electrical equipment to support capital projects through specification, acquisition, and installation of substation
apparatus. A senior engineer takes on a leadership role in the following activities and is expected to mentor and direct less
experienced engineers:
Specific Duties:
- Specify requirements and performance criteria for substation equipment such as: power transformers, instrument
transformers, capacitor banks, STATCOM and other FACTS equipment, power cables, switchgear, circuit breakers, Gas
Insulated Switchgear, disconnect switches, etc.
- Develop procurement strategies, participate in strategic sourcing, vendor analysis and negotiation.
- Review and approve equipment drawings, conduct design reviews, and accept factory and field testing.
- Provide Professional of Record assurance for safe energization during commissioning.
- Initiate studies, assess priorities and risks to ensure equipment meets industry standards and business requirements.
- Serve as BC Hydro's "Owner's Engineer" by reviewing the work of external service providers for compliance to internal
Engineering Standards, Design Codes, and engineering best practices.
- Stay informed on emerging technologies and industry trends.
- Build effective relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and suppliers.
- Provide coaching, mentoring and leadership to junior staff.
What you bring
The successful candidate must have the following qualifications and attributes:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities.
- Must be registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a P. Eng with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC).
- Minimum of 8+ years of experience in a relevant field, including experience in North American electric utilities, industrial,
or manufacturing environments.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Proven leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.

Self-starter with initiative and sound judgment.
The following would be an asset:
- Specialized knowledge of electrical power equipment (12kV to 500kV), including design, manufacturing, testing,
maintenance and/or operations experience.
- Related experience in equipment procurement, power system planning, or protection and control design.
- Active participation in professional societies (e.g. IEEE, IEC, CSA, CIGRE)

- Occasional travel to remote work sites and supplier facilities may be required.
