About the role

The Office of External Relations is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Director, Community Engagement.

The Office of External Relations is the university's central hub for connection and collaboration. We advance UCalgary's mission by uniting people, ideas, and initiatives across campus and beyond. By building and sustaining meaningful relationships with communities, partners, and stakeholders, we amplify the university's vision, communicate its priorities with clarity, and drive progress toward shared goals. External Relations features a number of major functions including Communications; Community Engagement, Government Relations and UCalgary International

The Director, Community Engagement reports to the Associate Vice President Community Engagement, leads the Community Engagement team, and is responsible for the strategy, management and coordination of community engagement and partnerships across the University.

As a key member of the Community Engagement team, the Director will collaborate actively with senior colleagues to maximize the opportunities for strategic and operational integration both with and across the various External Relations portfolio to enhance our overall effectiveness. The Director will also work closely with leaders in Faculties and other units across the University to ensure that portfolio programs support the community and industry partnership work in those areas as well as institutional goals and priorities.

Evening and early morning work is required due to the nature of the position.

While many community partnership activities are undertaken in the faculties and other units across campus, the Community Engagement team provides an important coordinating and relationship management role for these stakeholder programs while also directly supporting key institutional partnerships. At the same time, the team is a key gateway for community partners who want to start working with the University. Working in collaboration with colleagues in the faculties and units, the Director and their team will foster strategic and productive relationships with community partners by creating linkages within External Relations, across campus and between programs, coordinating infrastructure and processes and communities of practice, and ensuring alignment with university strategy.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Provide strategic counsel to the Associate Vice President and act as a trusted advisor on community engagement.
  • Contribute to the creation of strategies for the engagement of community stakeholders, execute these strategies including management of associated budgets and operational plans.
  • Support emerging community partnership opportunities, especially in the early stages before they are fully formed with a primary focus on multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder, strategic initiatives for the institution.
  • Contribute to the creation of the comprehensive annual business plan and budget in support of the Associate Vice President.
  • Build, develop, and coach the Community Engagement teams to develop positive, high trust working relationships and operate effectively as a team, including problem solving processes and conflict resolution.
  • Provide logistical and management support for key community collaborations to drive key institutional strategies.
  • Provide leadership and counsel to a team of professional staff members working in support of institutional and faculty-based priorities.
  • Create an environment where knowledge sharing, support, training tools, coaching and staff development ensure service levels meet or exceed expectations.
  • Support the Associate Vice President and University leaders to proactively engage external community partners and stakeholders to heighten the University's reputation and impact.
  • Develop and leverage partnership opportunities with community organizations, not-for-profits, and other educational institutions.
  • Provide a single unified triage point for community partnerships at the University and central point for actively managing those partner relationships.
  • Provide, in collaboration with Advancement Services, central relationship management services for community partnerships across the University.
  • Track activity within the Community Engagement team and developing appropriate methods for reporting on impact. This will include benchmarking activities and development of an evaluation framework to track and report on success of the team.
  • Collect, maintain, and support analysis using appropriate performance metrics to monitor partnership activities and impact of the Community Engagement team.
  • Ensure ongoing familiarity with University direction, economic environment, and current trends in community engagement and partnerships.
  • Develop and maintain resources that will improve the quality of community partnerships (Resources may include, for example, evaluation frameworks for impact).
  • Work with External Relations partners to develop and implement a marketing and communications plan (website. etc.).
  • Plan appropriate onboarding, outreach, and workshop offerings.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • A university degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a relevant discipline.
  • 7-10 years experience with high-level stakeholder engagement nationally and locally including in leadership roles (experience in industry and/or community engagement preferred).
  • A rich understanding of the important role community stakeholders play in achieving societal impact.
  • Experience working in large, complex organizations with a multi-faceted stakeholder environment where external relationships are essential for success (experience in the post-secondary, not-for-profit and/or public sector is an asset).
  • Ability to build, nurture, and manage a broad set of relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders that will help build strong partnerships with leaders, faculty, staff, students, and external communities. This includes strong experience with relationship management software and stakeholder data.
  • Engaging, diplomatic, tactful, open, and collaborative, and thrives on a high level of respectful interaction with others.
  • Excellent relationship and team-building skills with a proven ability to develop proactive partnerships and leverage the diverse skills of team members.
  • Strategic and operational expertise and the ability to implement and execute plans that require disciplined stewardship.
  • Capacity to adjust work schedule to meet multiple demands and pressures, with a demonstrated ability to provide a consistently high level of service.
  • Ability to work within ambiguity and successfully navigate complex systems and evolving priorities.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Highly effective presentation and public speaking skills.
  • A high standard of honesty, integrity, and trust.
