JOB SUMMARY
The primary function of this job is to ensure the jockey’s tack (equipment) and racing silks are ready for each race, as well as to remove the saddle after each race. This job must also provide assistance to trainers in saddling horses and provide assistance to the Clerk of the Scales.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide general care and maintenance of the tack for several jockeys.
- Prepare the racing silks for the jockeys.
- Arrange the appropriate tack for the jockeys in order to weigh out with the Clerk of the Scales.
- Bring tack to the paddock and assist the trainers with saddling the horses for the race and unsaddling after the race.
- Assisting the Clerk of the Scales and jockeys when required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Knowledge
- Knowledge of handling horses
- Knowledge of daily race card
- General racing knowledge
- Basic knowledge of the racing department
- Basic knowledge of the organization’s policies and practices
Skills
- General communication skills
- General skill in handling horses
- Basic investigation and ability to locate information/clothing apparel
Education and Experience
- Minimum 3 years experience with handling horses
- Minimum of Grade 10 education
Working Conditions
- Work is performed indoors and in the paddock area with some exposure to the track.
- Workload is controlled by the daily race card and there are tight time constraints.
- Required to physically handle horses, saddle and unsaddle horses.
