Coverage is as diverse as offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, to coastal logging camps in B.C., to construction camps in the Alberta Oil Sands. Facilities are located within drill camps, mining camps, construction camps, pipeline camps, oil and gas installations and correctional facilities.

Job Details

The salary range for this position is $130,000 to $135,000. Final compensation will be determined based on relevant skills, experience, qualifications, and internal equity. In addition to base salary, eligible employees may be entitled to other elements of total compensation, which may include group benefits, employer RRSP contributions, and discretionary bonus or incentive programs, where applicable to the role. We are committed to offering competitive compensation and comply with all applicable pay transparency legislation. Further details regarding our total rewards program will be shared by the Talent Acquisition team during the hiring process. Canadian work experience is not a requirement for this role. Job Summary

The HSQ Director is responsible for strategic leadership, development, implementation and continuous improvement of ESS/ECC's Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality (HSEQ) Management Systems across all ESS/ECC operations in Eastern Canada. This role ensures legal compliance, client alignment, and operational excellence while embedding a strong safety culture throughout ESS /ECC sites, projects, and support functions. The HSEQ Director acts as a senior leader and trusted advisor to operations, clients, and executive leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide visible, active leadership in support of ESS/ECC HSEQ values, policies, and commitments.
  • Direct and support ESS/ECC HSEQ Managers, Advisors, and site‑based HSEQ resources, holding them accountable for compliance and performance.
  • Sets the example by incorporating safe work practices in all activities and following all ESS and client safety policies and procedures.
  • Conduct periodic site visits, audits, and leadership engagements to verify compliance and promote continuous improvement.
  • Ensure ESS/ECC operational controls reflect applicable legal, regulatory, and client requirements.
  • Participate in Operations and HSEQ meetings
  • Respond to incidents, injuries and illnesses onsite
  • Provide support to Management for incident investigations and lead them in serious incidents
  • Interact with external stakeholders such as regulators and clients in person, as well as via email
  • Schedule and conduct audits and training sessions
  • Make recommendations for improvements in the area of HSEQ and other support functions, H&S and QA standards
  • Meet legislative and Compass HSEQ requirements by respecting operational objectives
  • Promote a strong safety culture through leadership engagement, communication, and associate involvement.
  • Monitor ESS/ECC HSEQ performance metrics, trends, and leading indicators.
  • Support annual HSEQ planning, objective setting, and management reviews.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across ESS operations.

Education and Experience:

  • Post-secondary education with a focus on Health and Safely preferred
  • Minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in OH&S and/or public health or relevant food safety role
  • CRSP/CHSC, NCSO, CSO, HACCP, GFSI
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required; comfortable with other technology such as smartphones and tablets preferred
  • Strong familiarity with technical and theoretical principles of Occupational Health & Safety and/or Quality Assurance (food safety)
  • Strong working knowledge of North American HSEQ legislation and management systems
  • Valid Emergency First Aid – CPR A & AED or higher level certification
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Ability to speak effectively before large and small groups of employees
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work in fast‑paced, client‑driven operational settings
