The City of Saskatoon is looking for a permanent full-time Maintenance Planning Superintendent

This positions goal is to enable the Maintenance Operations team to perform work effectively and efficiently, to improve fleet reliability and availability, and to support the efficient use of capital through informed decision-making and lifecycle planning.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the Maintenance Planning team, including hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, coaching, and discipline. Build a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement short- and long-term maintenance plans that support asset reliability, cost control, and service delivery. Ensure alignment with organizational objectives, operating budgets, and lifecycle asset management principles.
  • Oversee and standardize the process for creating, prioritizing, and releasing work orders, ensuring readiness for execution. Integrate planning with parts, labor, and equipment availability.
  • Strategically allocate labor based on skills, shift coverage, certifications, and workload. Anticipate resourcing needs and coordinate adjustments in collaboration with Operations.
  • Partner with Maintenance Operations to identify skill gaps and support training initiatives that promote technical growth, safety compliance, and operational excellence.
  • Monitor, track, and analyze maintenance KPIs such as PM compliance, backlog levels, and wrench time. Provide leadership with actionable insights and recommendations.
  • Refine PM programs using data analysis, equipment history, and manufacturer guidelines. Shift maintenance from reactive to proactive through RCM and CBM practices where appropriate.
  • Ensure the Fleet Management System (e.g., M5) and other maintenance platforms are correctly configured to support tracking of KPIs, standard repair times (SRTs), and workflow automation. Maximize software utilization for planning, analytics, and decision-making.
  • Ensure availability of all required parts, tools, documentation, and support materials prior to job release. Collaborate closely with Supply Chain Management and Maintenance Operations to reduce delays.
  • Ensure maintenance planning complies with SGI, OH&S, and all other relevant regulatory and internal safety requirements.
  • Maintain strong working relationships with Maintenance Operations, Supply Chain Management, Human Resources, and IT. Facilitate seamless communication and coordination across sections and departments.
  • Support capital and operating budget planning by projecting labor, parts, and equipment needs. Identify areas for cost savings and operational efficiency.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize maintenance effectiveness, reduce asset downtime, and standardize practices. Lead the cultural and operational shift toward proactive maintenance methodologies.
  • Develop contingency plans for unplanned events such as weather disruptions, major failures, or supply chain delays. Prioritize critical repairs and maintain fleet availability.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the Fleet Renewal Strategy and Asset Management Plan, aligning long-term capital planning with operational and service goals.
  • Perform additional related responsibilities as assigned in support of the maintenance strategy.

Qualifications

  • Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) designation.
  • Journeyperson certification (Truck & Transport, Heavy Duty, Automotive) is an asset.
  • 5+ years of experience in fleet maintenance or planning, including at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Familiarity with public or commercial transit systems is an asset.
  • Proven leadership and change management abilities.
  • Strong understanding of proactive maintenance strategies and asset management best practices.
  • Analytical thinker with experience interpreting data to improve performance.
  • Skilled in maintenance planning and scheduling, including use of standard repair times.
  • Proficient in fleet management software systems (e.g., M5, SAP) and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to safety, compliance, and continuous learning.

Weekly Hours: 36.67

Salary Range: $95,473.92 to $112,058.88 CAD per annum (2023 rates)
