Rainy River Mine Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. If you enjoy outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, winter sports and lake country then this is an area you will love to live and work in.
About The Role Schedule: 2 weeks on 2 weeks off (FIFO) / Residential
Position Reports To: UG Mine Manager
Position Overview The Underground Chief Engineer is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing all underground engineering activities at New Gold’s Rainy River underground mine. This role involves managing a team of engineers and technical personnel, ensuring the safety and efficiency of underground mining operations, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in underground mining engineering, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to upholding New Gold’s standards for safety, quality, and environmental stewardship.

Leadership And Management
- Lead and manage the underground engineering team, providing mentorship and guidance.
- Oversee sub-departments including underground mine planning and scheduling, rock mechanics, ventilation, and survey.
- Develop and implement engineering strategies and plans that align with overall operational goals and objectives.
- Coordinate with other departments (e.g., operations, electrical, and maintenance) to ensure seamless integration of engineering efforts.
Operational Oversight
- Oversee the design, planning, and execution of underground mining projects, ore body development, ground support systems, and infrastructure.
- Ensure that all underground engineering activities adhere to safety regulations, industry standards, and company policies.
- Monitor and manage underground operations to optimize productivity and resource utilization while minimizing costs.
Health, Safety And Environment
- Champion safety initiatives and ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the underground engineering team.
Technical Expertise
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for complex underground engineering challenges.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, equipment, and methodologies to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.
- Review and analyze engineering data and reports to inform decision-making and strategic planning.
Project Management
- Oversee project schedules, budgets, and resources, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Prepare and present engineering reports, project updates, and recommendations to senior management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering required; advanced degree preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) or equivalent certification is required.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in underground mining engineering, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or managerial role.
- Extensive knowledge of underground mining methods, ground control, ventilation, and equipment.
- Proven experience in managing large-scale underground mining projects and teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to address complex engineering challenges effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
