What You’ll Do The Lab Supervisor plays a key role in leading the day-to-day operations of our optical manufacturing lab, ensuring the accurate and timely production of lenses for custom frames. This role is responsible for supervising a small production team, coordinating workflow, maintaining quality standards, and managing equipment to deliver consistent, high-quality results. By overseeing inventory, monitoring performance metrics, and ensuring compliance with Specsavers’ operational and safety standards, the Lab Supervisor ensures that the lab runs efficiently and effectively to meet customer needs.

Beyond production oversight, the Lab Supervisor supports continuous improvement by applying Lean and Kaizen principles, identifying opportunities to streamline processes, and fostering a collaborative and positive team culture. Acting as the main link between the lab, customer service, and stores, this role ensures open communication, quick resolution of issues, and a strong focus on customer satisfaction. The Lab Supervisor is both a hands-on leader and mentor, guiding team members’ development while ensuring the lab contributes to Specsavers’ commitment to delivering exceptional products and services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate laboratory operations by overseeing day-to-day activities in the manufacturing lab, ensuring a smooth workflow, and collaborating with team members to achieve production targets.

  • Perform quality checks on optical components and finished products to verify compliance with specified Specsavers standards and promptly address the respective teams if any identified quality issues.

  • Maintain and calibrate optical manufacturing equipment to achieve precise and consistent results, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and arranging for necessary repairs.

  • Provide training and guidance to lab technicians, ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and safety protocols, and fostering professional development within the team including performance management, and maintain records of time/attendance and key performance indicators (KPIs).

  • Establish or adjust work assignments as needed to meet daily production targets.

  • Coordinate with the customer service team to ensure timely delivery of customer orders and provide timely feedback to the labs on quality issues for continuous improvement.

  • Maintain regular communication with the Customer Service Supervisor to discuss process improvements.

  • Perform duties in compliance with health and safety standards and procedures and participate in improvement initiatives to support Specsavers' continuous improvement philosophy.

  • Take responsibility for all incoming and outgoing jobs in the lab and promote company safety policies to ensure a secure working environment.

  • Effectively communicating with the stores to resolve any conflicts and disputes regarding the tolerances, quality, and rejected returns.

  • Logging ServiceNow tickets with IT and working closely with them on the resolution.

  • Placing special orders with the 3rd party labs.

  • Working closely with internal and external labs to raise and resolve quality issues.

  • Complete any other tasks in line with the company policies as requested by Customer Service Supervisor.

  • Processing lab error credits

  • This involves receiving jobs from stores to BCDC that fail to meet quality standards. Upon arrival at BCDC, these jobs are assessed against Specsavers quality standards and either approved or rejected by CS advisor accordingly.

  • Explaining the stores the reason of rejects, where applicable.

  • Warranty Claims Processing

  • Processing warranty returns, involves receiving jobs from stores to BCDC that require a warranty claim. Upon arrival at BCDC, the jobs are assessed against Specsavers standards and either approved or rejected by the CS advisor accordingly.

  • Explaining the stores the reason of rejects, where applicable.

  • Assist the members of wider BCDC team as and where required, cross-training for maximum effectiveness.

  • Maintain inventory of lab consumables and coordinate procurement to avoid shortages or delays.

  • Monitor lab efficiency metrics and prepare periodic reports to aid decision-making.

  • Participate in audits and ensure documentation is always audit-ready.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven experience supervising or managing teams in a production environment
  • Hands-on experience applying Lean or Kaizen principles to improve efficiency and drive continuous improvement
  • Strong background in inventory management
  • Ability to build a positive team culture and collaborate effectively with other departments
  • Customer-focused mindset with a clear understanding of how our work impacts those we serve
  • Comfortable developing and refining processes in a fast-paced, rapidly scaling organization
  • Edging and glazing experience in a lab environment, or optician experience, considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal

Compensation: $70,000 - $85,000 base salary, plus quarterly bonus, profit sharing, and benefits. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience
