ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Manager Innovation and Sustainability, this position is responsible for advocating for policies, incentives, and market mechanisms that accelerate sustainable practices and technologies across the Region. Identifies and champions opportunities for community energy innovation projects, facilitating and promoting their development from concept to implementation. Creates and fosters strategic partnerships, including with the development community, municipalities, businesses, utilities, and community organizations, the position mobilizes investment in low-carbon solutions, strengthens regulatory frameworks, promotes economic development, and fosters innovation.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Collaborates/works with partners and follows the corporate strategic leadership, planning and direction related to this function.

  • Develops and supports Public Works’ sustainability roadmap in alignment with the corporate strategic plan, ESG Priorities, Climate Change Action Plan, Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan and annual business priorities.

  • Develops multi-year plan(s) with the input from operational areas subject matter experts to implement community energy innovation projects that quantify and make use of waste byproducts, reduce costs and/or generate new sources of revenue for the Region.

  • Collaborates and engages in opportunities for community energy innovation projects by facilitating and promoting their development with the housing development community, municipalities, businesses, utilities, and community organizations

  • Develops, and updates departmental sustainability policies and standards to evolve sustainability governance and outcomes through delivery of capital infrastructure and delivery of department operations and services.

  • Evaluates department emissions, environmental discharges, waste disposal and resource use and is responsible for setting minimization targets and developing mitigation strategies, including exploring potential cost efficiencies and / or new revenue streams in collaboration with program leads and in alignment with the Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan.

  • Effectively manage and continuously improve processes and systems to capture relevant sustainability data for annual reporting obligations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Branch and Department objectives.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Successful completion of a University Degree or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three (3) years demonstrated experience in sustainability environmental management or related role including demonstrated minimum of one (1) year of direct supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant program development, applicable legislation and industry standards, and current practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant Standards, Acts and Regulations.
  • Ability to demonstrate the Region's leadership and core competencies.
  • Demonstrated report writing, analytical and project management skills to meet program objectives and work to tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate programs and services in assigned program area, and to develop and implement change management plans.
  • Staff supervisory skills including knowledge of collective agreement administration and interpretation, labour relations principles and practices and relevant employment legislation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to connect with a range of internal and external partners while focusing on fostering collaborative work relationships.
  • Strong communication, influencing and presentation skills with a strong customer focus.
  • Strong leadership to proactively engage in accessibility, diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, committing to and taking action to contribute to a more accessible, diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace.
  • Advanced skills MS Office Suite and use of virtual platforms.
  • Ability to travel to offsite locations, as required.
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours.
