About the role

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), Ontario is a provincial association, committed to improving services and support for individuals living with mental illnesses and addictions issues, and to the promotion of mental health in Ontario.

Talk Today is one of the most comprehensive mental health programs for amateur sports in Canada. Originally launched with the Ontario Hockey League in 2014, we seek to promote the mental health of young athletes and spread awareness about the benefits of positive mental health throughout communities across the country.

The program is delivered across amateur and youth sports, engaging athletes in junior hockey, taekwondo, football, and two new pilots with amateur sport organizations in Ontario. Core educational components include suicide prevention training for athletes aged 15 and older, as well as age-appropriate mental health presentations for athletes under 15. This role will contribute to the continued growth and impact of the program by helping ensure athletes receive meaningful, accessible mental health education.

Job Summary

CMHA Ontario is currently seeking a Program Coordinator & Trainer, Talk Today. This position will provide support and coordinate teams of Trainers from local CMHA branches in their respective regions.

The incumbent will work closely and receive strategic direction from the Talk Today Program Lead, but report to the Chief Operating Officer. The incumbent will coordinate trainings across Ontario as well as provide training and coaching support to team members as needed in their dedicated region.

The ideal candidate is comfortable operating on their own initiative, has experience working with senior leaders in the sport sector as well as leading and coordinating colleagues. This person also has experience delivering in-person and virtual training.

Core Responsibilities

  • Coordinates Talk Today training and presentations to local sport organizations within Ontario.

  • Delivers training sessions in accordance with program standards, ensuring consistent and high-quality learning experiences for athletes, parents, coaches, and team staff.

  • Provides administrative support (as needed) to CMHA Trainers across the province and helps to support and coordinate region-specific training activities.

  • Assists in curriculum development and revisions based on feedback from client representatives, participant evaluations as well as post-session trainer feedback.

  • Engages with sport organizations to promote and encourage participation in the Talk Today program.

  • Utilizes and leverages a stakeholder database (Smartsheet) to coordinate training activities.

  • In partnership with the Talk Today Program Lead, support the development and execution of action plans to meet projected targets.

  • Works with the Talk Today Program Lead and Communications team to share activity updates with stakeholders.

  • Responds to registration requests and provides updates about region-specific training activities to the Talk Today program lead on a regular basis.

  • Supports the implementation of research and quality improvement initiatives to support program efficiency to ensure optimal client experience.

  • Assists with grant application submissions when requested.

  • Attends regular meetings of the Talk Today and CMHA Ontario teams.

  • Travel may be required, around Southern Ontario.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience training adult and/or child learners required.

  • Experience with coordination required, along with experience in project management, which is an asset.

  • Experience and knowledge in minor girls and boys hockey is an asset.

  • Ability to deliver training effectively in English required, and in French a strong.

  • Demonstrated ability to present to and/or facilitate large groups of participants, both virtually and in-person.

  • Ability to design and deliver curricula related to mental health and addictions.

  • Work experience in the community sector an asset.

  • Familiarity with key concepts of mental health promotion, health equity, and social determinants of health an asset.

  • Working knowledge of the mental health and addictions sector an asset.

  • Highly strategic thinker with strong leadership skills.

  • Well-developed administrative, organizational, and problem-solving skills; Effectively prioritizes and manages workload and can successfully meet tight deadlines.

  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including strong writing, editing, and presentation skills with a high attention to detail.

  • Experience applying judgment, initiative, and discretion when dealing with confidential, legal, and/or sensitive information.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, and Outlook), experience with database management (Smartsheet) is an asset.

  • Experience with coaching practices is an asset.

  • Experience with implementing and supporting programmatic change is preferred.

  • G Class license required.

Salary

Hiring Rate: This position pays between $73,520.97 and $75,726.60 per annum, based on a 35- hour work week.

The salary grid for this role ranges between $73,520.97 at Step 1 and $82,748.49 at Step 5. The initial salary offered for this position is anticipated to fall between Step 1 and Step 2 of the salary grid as posted above as the hiring rate.

The successful candidate will be eligible for a comprehensive benefits package that includes pension through HOOPP, life, health, and dental insurance, exclusive paid time-off and opportunities for professional development.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, special funded temporary contract position until June 30, 2026, working standard office hours (currently 35 hours/week). Incumbents must have strong knowledge of healthcare services in Ontario. This position is based in Toronto, Ontario. We are currently operating within a hybrid model, with colleagues working from the office 3 days/week and from home 2 days/week.

This position may require travel when necessary, possibly requiring overnight stays.

This position is also a desk job with extended periods of sitting, reading, telephone/virtual interaction, and working at the computer. This position involves some moderate lifting, shipping, and handling. Attendance at various meetings throughout the workday/workweek will be required; meetings may occur on short notice, depending on the circumstances.

This position is within the OPSEU Bargaining Unit.

As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to maintain and submit proof of full COVID-19 vaccination.
