The Opportunity:
The Ottawa Citizen has an immediate opening for a Breaking News Reporter. The successful candidate will bring a strong work ethic, a passion for local journalism, and an ability to work under pressure to the role. Your work will focus squarely on one of the most valuable and well-read beats in the city: public safety. When disaster strikes or chaos emerges, you will be on the scene to deliver Ottawa readers the facts they need to know — and how to stay safe.

What you’ll do:
- Seek out and respond to breaking news events in the national capital region
- Report on the biggest stories in the city, with speed and clarity
- Pitch ideas for enterprise stories that bring a solutions lens to public safety issues in Ottawa
- File news in various formats, including quick hits, in-depth explainers, live blogs, and video
- Work collaboratively with a tight-knit team of reporters, editors, photographers and digital producers to bring essential journalism to our readers
Qualifications

A digital-first journalist with a proven track record for writing clean copy, quickly

A daily news reader, who has a finger on the pulse of how the city of Ottawa ticks
-
An excellent communicator and collaborator who thrives under pressure

A team player who will go the extra mile to support colleagues, and tell stories that matter to the citizens of Ottawa
-
A journalism degree or equivalent work experience

A valid G driver’s licence

Demonstrated success writing breaking news —please send us your best writing samples!

Experience with video or audio production and/or data visualization is an asset Bilingualism is an asset
