Science World is a mission-based, charitable organization that supports the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Design and Math) literacy across British Columbia. Our Science for All strategy is to revitalize Science World with a substantial capital plan to replace critical infrastructure, enhance the visitor experience and develop new content across all our channels under the themes of Regeneration of the Planet, Human Health, and Inclusion. Our plan is to ensure that people throughout British Columbia, especially under-represented communities, have access to high quality, informal STEAM learning. Through our onsite, online and outreach programs, Science World seeks to spark curiosity and wonder in STEAM and support development of talent across communities in the province.

Position Description:
Science World’s facility opened in 1985 as the Expo Preview Centre and then became the Expo Centre for the World Fair in 1986. It is well known for its iconic geodesic dome located on False Creek and world-class exhibits.
Under the leadership of the Chief Operating Officer and leading a team of facility professionals, the Facility Director is responsible for the strategic direction, operational management, and continuous improvement of Science World’s physical infrastructure and related services. This role encompasses oversight of the facility, grounds, maintenance, safety, sustainability initiatives, capital projects, and vendor relationships. The Facility Director ensures that all environments support the organization’s mission, values, and business objectives while providing a safe, efficient, and welcoming space for employees, volunteers and visitors.
The Facility Director is a critical leader and collaborator, shaping the physical environment and infrastructure that underpin Science World’s success. This role combines strategic vision, direct operational expertise, and collaborative leadership across the entire organization to ensure facilities are safe, resilient, and aligned with the organization’s future. The role demands a blend of technical proficiency, financial stewardship, and people skills, making it a dynamic and impactful position.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive facilities management strategy aligned with organizational goals, including short-term and long-term capital plans, renovation initiatives, preventative maintenance and space optimization
- Operational Oversight: Lead and supervise all aspects of facilities operations, including building maintenance, repairs, janitorial services, landscaping and energy management
- Capital Projects: Oversee planning, budgeting, and execution of capital improvement projects and renovations, ensuring projects are completed on time, within scope, and on budget
- Budget Management: Prepare and manage operating and capital budgets, monitor expenditures, and identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies
- Team Leadership: Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate a diverse team of facilities professionals, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
- Compliance and Safety: Ensure the facility meets regulatory requirements, industry standards, and best practices related to health, safety, fire protection, accessibility, and environmental stewardship
- Vendor and Contractor Management: Negotiate and manage contracts with external service providers, consultants, and contractors; evaluate performance and ensure service quality
- Sustainability Initiatives: Champion environmentally responsible practices, such as energy conservation, waste reduction and accessibility programs
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate physical risks to property, equipment, and personnel; and collaborating with the Manager, Security & Safety maintain emergency preparedness plans and business continuity programs
- Space Planning and Utilization: Oversee allocation and efficient use of space, including office layouts, workspace design and future growth requirements
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with the senior leadership team, Director team, departments, and external partners to understand needs, share updates, and support organizational initiatives
- Technology Integration: Implement and maintain facilities management systems, support innovation through smart building technologies, and leverage data analytics for decision-making
- Reporting and Communication: Prepare and present regular reports to the COO on facilities performance, project status, budget forecasts, and emerging issues. Support the Development team as requested to submit and report on grant funding applications
- Operate within the philosophy, culture and values of Science World
- Perform other related duties as required to fulfill any changing business needs of this role
Working Conditions
- Facility site, with some ability to work from home
- Site inspections, walking, and exposure to construction areas or mechanical equipment rooms
- Standard business hours with flexibility needed for emergencies, project deadlines, special events, or after-hours issues
Qualifications:

Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in facilities management or operations. Relevant experience in a not-for-profit setting is desirable but not required. Must have experience working in a similar capacity for a publicfacility, ideally a high-profile, high use Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset

Certifications: Professional credentials such as Certified Facility Manager (CFM), Facilities Management Professional (FMP), or similar designations are an asset

Technical Skills: Expertise in facilities management software/systems, project management, building codes, construction processes, sustainability standards, and workplace safety

Leadership & Communication: Proven ability to lead diverse teams, communicate effectively across all levels, and influence strategic decisions

Financial Acumen: Strong experience in budget creation, financial analysis, contract negotiation, and cost control

Problem Solving: Demonstrated ability to anticipate, diagnose, and resolve issues quickly and effectively in a fast-paced environment

Experience working with Microsoft Office suite
The pay range for this position is $120,000 - $160,000 per year.
