Job Description ASSISTANT MANAGER, PAYROLL Victoria
The O pportunity As a key member of a results-driven, high performance team, you provide assistance in the management and coordination of all aspects of payroll function to ensure accurate and timely payment of employee wages, pension, benefits and payroll taxes . You work closely with various departments at BC Ferries by providing subject matter expertise for emerging issues and new initiatives .
You play a key role in the development and implementation of policies, objectives and strategic goals for the department, ensuring effectiveness of internal controls, keeping current with developments in payroll process, technology and relevant legislation.
The Role Reporting to the Manager, Payroll, you add value and are energized by key areas of oversight such as:
- Provid ing daily guidance and support to payroll department staff to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of the semi-monthly payroll processes
- Participat ing in hiring, training and performance management of department staff
- Provid ing subject matter expertise on payroll processes, policies and procedures to internal and external clients
- Ensur ing staff have appropriate training and that procedures are documented and maintained
- Provid ing daily guidance and support to Payroll Accounting Analyst, Payroll Technician, Payroll Support Clerk and Senior Payroll Analyst
- Provid ing guidance to the Payroll Team Lead in the resolution of complex pay enquiries
- Participat ing in the development of strategic goals for the department with a view to streamlining processes and maximizing productivity
- Ensur ing compliance with internal controls and identifies changes to processes requiring changes to internal control procedures
- Keep ing current with developments in payroll practices, technologies and relevant legislative changes
- Review ing reconciliations and remittances to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Responsib le for production and issuing of statutory reports, including T4's and T4A's and all year-end, adjustments, Pension Corporation Reports, W.C.B. Reports, etc.
- Develop ing reports, analysis, and provides information as required to support quarter and fiscal year end processes and audits
What You Bring To The Team
- Minimum Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation under the National Payroll Institute and working towards completion of Payroll Leadership Professional (PLP) - formerly Certified Payroll Manager ( CPM)
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance , Accounting, Business Administration or other related field considered an asset
- Minimum of 4 to 6 years’ payroll experience in a complex computerized payroll environment, extensive knowledge of payroll practices
- Minimum of 1 to 3 years’ training and supervisory experience
- 4 to 6 years’ experience with complex payroll matters (preferred)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, including date manipulation, analysis and reporting (e.g., formulas, pivot tables, VLOOKUP)
- Proficient in using various software applications and systems at an intermediate level to support payroll processing and reporting tasks.
- Demonstrates enthusiasm for team success through effective leadership, coaching, and motivation
- Strong communicator with excellent analytical and critical-thinking skills
- Ensures accuracy and attention to detail in all work
- Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently
- Capable of meeting strict and often conflicting deadlines effectively

Additional Information The target salary range: $77,300 - $96,600 per annum. The starting salary is determined based on the succes sful candidate’s knowledge, experience and internal equity. Starting salary may exceed the target range on exceptional basis.
