About The Opportunity

Focus on the Family Canada is seeking an experienced, compassionate Christian counsellor to provide high-quality online counselling services to adult individuals across Canada. This role combines clinical excellence with a Christ-centred approach to care, supporting individuals from a variety of backgrounds while upholding the mission, values, and Statement of Faith of Focus on the Family Canada.

The Counselling and Care Ministries department provides Christian counsel and care for constituents who contact Focus Canada regarding difficult family, relationship, and p ersonal issues . Team members articulate, communicate and explain Focus Canada’s Christian perspective through “front line” initial contact, Christian counselling and care services for individuals and groups , often offering prayer for those that they serve.

The successful candidate will be a skilled clinician who is passionate about helping people find hope, healing, and practical next steps through professional counselling.

Collaborate with an experienced clinical team and professional support in a healthy team environment

What’s the job?

Clinical Counselling

Provide approximately six professional online counselling (video and phone) sessions per client (adult individuals) to those seeking short-term support, while recognizing when referrals to longer-term care or specialized services is appropriate . Conduct assessment of clients' presenting concerns and develop appropriate treatment goals and recommendations . Integrate evidence-based counselling practices with a Christian worldview, while respecting the beliefs and backgrounds of each client.

Success Looks Like

Clients receive timely , professional, and compassionate counselling services. Client satisfaction and care experience reflect ministry and clinical excellence. Clients demonstrate progress toward identified counselling goals.

Ministry Leader Care

Support the emotional, relational, spiritual, and vocational health of pastors, ministry leaders, missionaries, or their spouses through counselling that recognizes the unique realities of ministry life.

Success Looks Like

Counselling interventions reflect an understanding of ministry-specific challenges. Appropriate integration of faith, theology, and counselling principles occurs when desired by the client. Positive outcomes contribute to greater resilience and long-term ministry effectiveness.

Resource Recommendations and Referrals

Ensure clients are connected to appropriate resources , (books, articles, podcasts, broadcasts,) support networks, and specialized services that best meet their ongoing needs

Success Looks Like

Appropriate referrals are provided in a timely manner when additional or specialized care is required . Clients receive helpful ministry resources that support continued growth. Counsellor Referral Network and community resources are utilized effectively.

Documentation and Professional Standards

Maintain professional standards, regulatory compliance, and accurate records that support safe, ethical, and accountable counselling services.

Success Looks Like

Client records are accurate , complete, and maintained within required timelines. Professional, legal, and ethical standards are consistently upheld. Privacy, confidentiality, and duty-to-report requirements are met.

Ministry Development and Administrative Standards

Contribute to the growth, effectiveness, and sustainability of Counselling and Care Ministries through collaboration, professional development, and ministry innovation. Administrative responsibilities are completed accurately and in a timely manner .

Success Looks Like

Active participation in team collaboration, consultation, and learning opportunities. Contributions support ministry resources, programs, and initiatives. Professional knowledge remains current through ongoing development. Ministry projects and departmental initiatives receive meaningful support .

About You

A m aster's degree in Counselling Psychology , Clinical Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a closely related discipline. Current registration or eligibility for registration with a recognized Canadian professional regulatory body. Membership with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) is strongly preferred. Minimum 5 years of experience providing counselling to adult clients and commitment to ongoing professional development. Demonstrated experience conducting clinical assessment, treatment planning, and short-term counselling interventions. Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities . Ability to build trust quickly and create a safe therapeutic environment. Ability to work independently while contributing positively within a team to build good working relationships and a healthy, supportive team culture. Sound judgment, professional boundaries, and ethical decision-making. Proficiency with electronic health records and virtual counselling platforms, with strong organizational and documentation skills. Experience working with pastors, ministry leaders, or faith-based organizations is considered an asset. Experience providing online counselling is an asset.
