SCC has implemented a hybrid working model. Our model balances remote work with coming together in person when it is purposeful. This position can work remotely most of the time, while requiring in-person work regularly. SCC's office is located at 55 Metcalfe Street in downtown Ottawa.

A day in the Life of a Senior Researcher

The Senior Researcher leads evidence-based projects that inform strategic decisions on standardization and trade. The role will involve maintaining a key internal database for SCC. It also includes analyzing complex data, drafting policy briefs, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. They often engage with stakeholders, present findings, and contribute to national and international initiatives—ensuring SCC’s work reflects current socio-economic priorities and supports Canada's innovation and standardization goals.

Your background

  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Economics, Social Science, or a related field
  • Advanced expertise in research methodologies, and data analysis.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian government structure, policy priorities, and their relation to economic, social, and trade agendas.
  • Solid grasp of standards development, accreditation, and related technical practices.
  • Knowledge of project management principles and stakeholder/public relations.
  • Understanding of intellectual property, SCC Act, copyright, and privacy laws.
  • Good communication skills (oral and written)
  • Strong computer skills, including expertise with statistical software
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and research skills.
  • Ability to manage complex information, distill key insights, and make data-driven recommendations.
  • Capable of building and leveraging networks of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective time management and ability to meet deadlines while representing the organization professionally.

Key Activities

  • Maintenance of internal database identifying references to standards in Federal, Provincial and Territorial regulations.
  • Lead complex research projects related to standardization, trade, policy, and regulatory issues.
  • Design and implement research methodologies using quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Analyze economic, social, and geopolitical trends to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Develop evidence-based recommendations for internal policies and external positioning.
  • Draft high-impact reports, briefs, and presentations for executive and stakeholder audiences.
  • Provide expert advice on research and policy development to internal teams and leadership.
  • Coordinate cross-functional research initiatives in collaboration with other departments.
  • Plan and facilitate consultations, surveys, and focus groups with external stakeholders
  • Represent the organization in interdepartmental and external forums to share research insights.
  • Engage with government, industry, and academic partners to build strategic research alliances.
  • Monitor regulatory and policy developments relevant to national and international standards.
  • Support corporate planning processes through data-driven insights and foresight analysis.
  • Develop and track project plans, deliverables, and performance indicators to ensure timely execution.
  • Promote best practices in research ethics, knowledge translation, and impact measurement.
  • Understanding of intellectual property, SCC Act, copyright, and privacy laws.

A final note

1: Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents

2: SCC is responsible for the Personnel Security Clearance process. Typically to be eligible for “Reliability" clearance, you must have five years of verifiable background information and to be eligible for a "Secret" clearance, you must have 10 years of verifiable background information. The process usually involves reference inquiries, verification of qualifications, criminal records checks, and credit checks (as required) and may require fingerprints.
