Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Planning, Development & Sustainability, the Building Official Level 2 is primarily responsible for the review, approval, and processing of building and plumbing applications, including inspections.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and issues building, sign, and plumbing permits in compliance with applicable regulations such as the City’s Zoning Bylaw, Servicing Bylaws, B.C. Energy Step Code, B.C. Building Code, and WorkSafe B.C. for Part 9 residential and small commercial buildings.
- Calculates and determines Permit Fees and Development Cost Charges where applicable.
- Schedules and conducts inspections to ensure all works substantially meet minimum code and other related standards and regulations.
- Coordinates inter-departmental and external agency review of complex Building Permits as appropriate.
- Takes administrative and enforcement action as may be required to ensure compliance with City Bylaws, Codes, and other related standards and regulations, including Stop Work Orders where appropriate. Reviews serious compliance issues with the Manager of Planning, Development & Sustainability.
- May provide support in the preparation of staff reports on building-related matters as required.
- Provides information services to the public on technical, regulatory, and Building & Plumbing Code requirements, including relevant City Bylaws.
- Complies with, and promotes safe work practices and procedures, in support of a safe and healthy work environment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will have BOABC Level 2 and POABC Level 1 qualifications. They will also have a minimum of 3 years building inspection experience, and sound knowledge of residential and commercial construction methods, including BC Building and Plumbing Codes.
This position is a CUPE Local 2262 position with an attractive hourly rate of $50.39 (September 1, 2025 Rate), plus a comprehensive benefits package. Upon successful qualification at Level 3/RBO designation will receive an hourly wage of $55.89 (Sept 1, 2025 rate).
