Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry is a leading Canadian centre of outstanding education and research shaping health care for the next generation and is the largest and most complex faculty on campus.
Basic Medical Sciences Undergraduate Education (BMSUE) is the centralized office that oversees the administration of the BMSc Program across the seven basic medical sciences departments, the undergraduate program in Neuroscience (BSc), and other course offerings in the basic medical sciences. In addition, this unit is the home of the Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (IMS) modules, which represent the largest group of students within the BMSc Program, as well as the Major and Minor in Medical Sciences. Led by the Associate Dean, the Unit currently consists of a Manager, Coordinator, four faculty members who develop and teach undergraduate Medical Sciences courses, and the BMSUE Laboratory Manager, who oversees all Medical Sciences laboratory courses.
Responsibilities
The Coordinator, BMSUE is responsible and accountable for supporting the consistent implementation and interpretation of University and Faculty academic policies and regulations across BMSUE course and modular offerings. The role oversees and contributes to the day-to-day administrative and logistical functions required for effective program delivery, and ensures that students, faculty, leaders, staff, and the BMSUE Program Committee have accurate academic information, documentation, and resources. The Coordinator provides students with clear and timely guidance regarding admission, progression, module requirements, Intent to Register, and Adjudication (in person, via email, and online). The role serves as a key resource to the Academic Advising team by offering expertise on academic processes within the basic medical sciences. In addition, the Coordinator supports curriculum and academic governance processes, and contributes to award adjudication, international exchange and combined-degree processes, and maintenance of program databases. The role also assists with aligning resources to meet program objectives and contributes to communications and materials that enhance program clarity, reputation, and awareness.
Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate Degree; in Science or Basic Medical Sciences is preferred
Experience:
- 5 years of experience working in a post-secondary academic institution environment
- 5 years of experience working with students in an academic environment, with experience in implementing and interpreting academic policies and procedures is preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with academic University policies and procedures preferred
- Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Ability to write clear, concise and accurate procedural documentation
- Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
- Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
- Capacity to support and demonstrate openness to persons of diverse backgrounds and beliefs
- Ability to understand customer needs and expectations and provide excellent customer service to directly and indirectly satisfy expectations
- Attention to detail with an ability to retrieve, analyze and synthesize sizable amounts of data, while ensuring that information is accurate and comprehensive

- Interpersonal skills to liaise with prospective and current students, staff, faculty and other members of the Western community
- Ability to handle complex, ambiguous situations with diplomacy, calmness and good judgment
- Proven ability and natural inclination to develop relationships by interacting with people in a professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
- Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve department goals
