Job Description Contract long term up to 13 months Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The DCFO, Payments (PRESTO) team is looking for a Senior Financial Analyst to provide financially informed analytical support to the Payments project portfolio. This is a senior role, and the candidates are expected to understand the financial and strategic impact of business processes, have the ability to recommend tactical and strategic financial and accounting policies that adhere to accounting standards, be able to evaluate current and future business activities in terms of dependencies, risks, financial and strategic implication, including preparation of budgets, forecasts and dashboards.
What will I be doing?
- Develop dashboards, presentations, conduct facilitation and prepare other materials to convey information about financial performance and critical risks to the Payments Capital in a timely manner
- Provides subject matter expertise to non-finance business leaders, partners and committee members, assists in interpretation of financial data for decision-making and provides commentary on the Payments Capital portfolio
- Conducts financial analyses in support of the business operations in the assigned division, using proper accounting treatment; provides subject matter expertise in analyzing and responding to inquiries and solving complex problems
- Creates and applies reporting templates, financial models and automated processes to meet legal, governance and corporate standards, including meeting deadlines
- Assesses the implications of new processes, systems, contracts, and projects from an accounting perspective, (e.g., detecting defects, limitations, cost-benefit implications, and risks prior to implementation)
- Provides finance forecasting and reports (e.g., variance and cost-recovery analysis, reconciliation of accounts), prepares entries, and takes corrective action
- Provides subject matter expertise to support other financial professionals and activities (i.e., accountants, auditors, budget managers)
- Recommends process and control improvements (e.g., automating technology or accounting practices) and provides clear standards of practice, protocols, and direction for internal and external partners
- Provides guidance on cost capitalization to product owners and project managers, participating in project kick-off meetings and validating budget and forecast submissions.
- Prepares budget tables for project funding requests, supports financial and strategic analyses, and performs project cost reconciliation/modelling with a focus on capital costs.
- Analyzes budget/forecast variances, provides commentaries, and reports, supports month-end activities. Identifies funding shortages and prompts additional funding requests.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Completion of a degree in Accounting, Finance, Math, Commerce, or related field – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
- Demonstrated experience as a senior financial analyst
- Experience with Canadian Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) principles
- Knowledge of business practices, financial analysis and reporting; understands the financial and accounting impact of business processes to evaluate current and future business activities (e.g., audit, legal, and reporting requirements)
- MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Oracle
- Outstanding Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation communication skills to develop and present commentary, reports, and presentations on financial analysis to senior management to aid decision-making
- Extremely strong writing, critical thinking and analytical abilities
