Position - Continuing Teacher
Assignment Type - Continuing
FTE/Point Time - 0.3 Point Time

Applicants must have training and/or experience in Indigenous Education and have experience as an (elementary/middle/secondary) classroom teacher. Candidates will have a strong understanding of Indigenous pedagogy, Indigenous histories, and cultures, and be able to demonstrate expertise in embedding Indigenous content in a wide range of instructional strategies, inclusive of literacy, numeracy, and Social Emotional learning to support Indigenous Learner success. Applicants will work closely with classroom teachers and the Indigenous Education Team to support Indigenous learners to build a strong literacy and numeracy foundations together with the Core Competencies. Applicants must also be prepared to use technology (e.g. computers, Teams, e-mail, websites, MyEducation BC etc.) for planning, communication, instruction, and reporting purposes; and be prepared to support the Equity in Action Agreement and the District Enhancement Agreement goals. Applicants must be prepared to work with educators and participate/plan in the support of Indigenous initiatives throughout District schools. Applicants must have the capacity and willingness to advocate on behalf of Indigenous learners through a lens of equity, diversity and inclusion. Qualifications All postings require:

  • Commitment to support the full range of student abilities
  • Effective communication skills with students, parents and colleagues
  • Candidates will have a strong understanding of Indigenous pedagogy, Indigenous histories, and cultures, and be able to demonstrate expertise in embedding Indigenous content in a wide range of instructional strategies
  • Commitment to ongoing professional learning and development
  • Applicants must also be prepared to use technology (e.g. computers, Teams, e-mail, websites, MyEducation BC etc.) for planning, communication, instruction, and reporting purposes

Specific to this posting:

  • Bachelor of Education (Elementary)
  • Two years successful classroom experience at the elementary level
  • Knowledge of the W̱SÁNEĆ culture, local protocols, and current issues of concern to persons of Indigenous ancestry, including members of the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation and those of other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit backgrounds
  • Significant leadership experience, preferably in relation to developing and enhancing Indigenous community and cultural awareness in schools and building cultural competency practice and pedagogy
  • Demonstrated successful experience acting as a role model for and working with Indigenous students supporting them in literacy, numeracy and the development of learning strategies and skill development
  • Demonstrated proficiency in developing connections and partnerships with Indigenous Communities, partner organizations
  • Effective communication skills, demonstrated through positive relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians and the community
  • Strong administrative skills to manage the ongoing documentation processing requirements associated with the Indigenous Support Program readiness to work as a member of the Indigenous Education team including working with classroom teachers, Indigenous Support Staff, District Teacher Leaders, District Staff and Committees
  • Are willing to work in a collaborative/team environment
  • Have training/experience and be willing to use Quality Assessment practices
  • Ability to demonstrate strong leadership in all areas of Indigenous Education
  • Have thorough knowledge of the redesigned curriculum with integration of Indigenous Worldviews and Perspectives
  • Ability to successfully model proven Indigenous perspectives and methodologies using the First Peoples Principles of Learning
