About the role

*MUST BE A CANADIAN CITIZEN

We are currently seeking a GIS Specialist and Mapper. The role is to help plan excavation projects and lay out planned units before we go into the field. To use GIS to overlay aerial photographs, LiDAR data, and supporting information, to help us understand sites and their surrounding landscapes. In the field, we collect geographic information with hand-mapping and survey equipment, which we bring back and drop into our GIS for record keeping and analysis.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Spatial Data Management:

  • Acquire, organize, and manage spatial data related to archaeological sites, landscapes, and features.
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and proper documentation of data sources.
  • Design, configure, and maintain ArcGIS Online field data collection forms (e.g., Survey123, Field Maps) to ensure standardized, accurate, and efficient archaeological data capture.

GIS Analysis and Interpretation:

  • Utilize Esri’s GIS software to conduct spatial analysis, including spatial relationships, proximity analysis, terrain analysis, and more.

Cartography and Visualization:

  • Create detailed and visually compelling maps, charts, and diagrams that effectively communicate archaeological findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Develop 2D and 3D representations of archaeological features and landscapes.

Data Integration:

  • Integrate archaeological data with other relevant datasets, such as historical records, environmental data, and topographic information.
  • Collaborate with specialists in related fields to create comprehensive analyses.

Database Management:

  • Maintain and update GIS databases specific to archaeological projects.
  • Develop and implement data standards to ensure consistency and compatibility.
  • Manage, quality-control, and maintain spatial and attribute data collected by field crews within ArcGIS Online, ensuring data integrity, consistency, and compliance with project and confidentiality requirements.

Fieldwork Support:

  • Provide technical expertise in the field, including GPS data collection, georeferencing, and site mapping.
  • Assist with setting up and maintaining field data collection workflows.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with archaeologists, researchers, historians, and other experts to enhance the interdisciplinary approach to archaeological studies.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to understand project requirements and deliver results.

Technological Advancement:

  • Stay updated on the latest GIS software, tools, and techniques relevant to archaeological research.
  • Evaluate and recommend new technologies that could improve the efficiency and accuracy of archaeological GIS work.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong proficiency in GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or other relevant tools.
  • Familiarity with archaeological terminology, methods, and fieldwork.
  • Proficiency in cartography, spatial analysis, and data visualization techniques.
  • Knowledge of GPS technology and field data collection methods.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • Position to be based in the Lower Mainland at the Campfire Office.
  • Anticipated workload to be 40 hours a week, full-time, permanent.
  • Benefits etc., will be available after a 3-month probation period.
  • Salary range will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the selected candidate.
