The Opportunity

The Ministry of Social Services, Child & Family Programs, Center Service Area, requires an Emergency Duty Worker for the community of North Battleford. This position would provide a range of services designed to assess or provide support services for children and families using the Family Centered Case Management Model of practice. The position will be responsible for providing after-hours emergency services to families including evenings/overnights, weekends and statutory holidays, in addition to working during office hours. This role will report to a Child and Family Programs Supervisor.

In this position, you will:

  • Work on a bi-weekly rotation for one week providing after-hours emergency services coverage including evenings/overnights, weekends, and holidays; with the next week working regular office hours.
  • Be responsible for operational support to a Child Protection unit, under the direction of a Child Protection Supervisor.
  • Develop and maintain open and honest work relationships, encouraging teamwork with clients, foster families, biological families, collateral agencies, and other members of the unit or community.
  • Accompany case workers to investigate instances of children in need of protection.
  • Assess child abuse and neglect referrals, assessing risk for child safety and determining the level of involvement including developing safety plans for families in crisis.
  • Observe and record interviews with families, children and caregivers.
  • Explore options for placing children and assisting families to work through this process.
  • Make referrals for services with caregivers and coordinate case conferences.
  • Research case files and document background information to support case planning.
  • Transport families and provide emergency aid to individuals in financial needs.
  • You will also be required to travel, work flexible hours, and lift and carry small children.

  • Have knowledge of multi-cultural beliefs and values, with particular emphasis on First Nations and Métis.
  • Have strong knowledge of poverty, systemic and socio-economic issues and how they impact people

Knowledge of human service-related policies, practices and procedures will be considered an asset. Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be obtained through a diploma or degree in a Human Service-related field and experience working in a human service setting. You must be legally eligible to operate a motor vehicle in Saskatchewan. You will be required to lift, carry, and transport small children, as well as travel distances within and outside the service area.

This competition will be used to create an eligibility list that will be valid for up to 6 months and will be used to staff current and future opportunities.
