The opportunity:
The Research Nurse will work with a team on a project to describe the knowledge, attitudes and practices about sexually-transmitted and blood borne infections (STBBI) and drug use, to determine the incidence of 12 STBBI using routine laboratory testing and dual-point-of care testing for HIV and syphilis, and the intersecting factors creating syndemics of concurrent sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBI), and the impact of methamphetamine use and concurrent STBBI among women, men and gender-diverse persons in Manitoba. This research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
The Research Nurse will be working between several community-based organizations and community health centres, during year 1 and year 2. The nurse will explain the project, if the participant agrees to participate in the research obtain the singed consent forms, fill out the questionnaires, ask the clinical questions, provide pre- and post- STBBI testing counselling, collect the point-of-care testing and the samples for confirmatory testing of 12 STBBI, and in case of any STBBI diagnosis, the research nurse will contact the primary care providers to provide treatment and linkage to care, and will conduct the follow-up of participants. The research nurse might need to administer syphilis and other STBBI treatment on the same visit if the primary care provider cannot see the person on the spot, after consultation with infectious disease doctors. The research nurse will also contact the Manitoba HIV Program to link to care. The research nurse will also consult with the ID docs and HIV clinicians in case of any questions related to clinical issues of participants. The research nurse will also perform scheduled follow-ups included in the research project. The research nurse will work with a team composed of other research team members, community peers, and collaborate with internal and external partners, and will disseminate findings to stakeholders and collaborators.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:
- Baccalaureate in Nursing from a recognized university.
- Registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.
- Minimum 1 year of nursing experience.
- Proof of Immunization & Testing (rubella, measles, hepatitis B, varicella, covid-19).
- People from traditionally marginalized or silenced communities are encouraged to apply, including racialized and Indigenous persons; men who have sex with men, lesbian, bi, queer, two-spirit and transgendered people; and other individuals from groups who have been historically under-represented in health research.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Knowledge in assessment, lab interpretation and management of STBBI.
- Knowledge and experience in specimen collection.
- Knowledge in mixed methods approach with strong skills in qualitative research is an asset.
- Experience working with community, ideally with vulnerable or marginalized populations.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to consistently demonstrate compassion and understanding related to diversity, inequality, stigma and discrimination, and the needs of people experiencing houselessness, people living with HIV, people diagnosed with STBBI, people who use drugs, people who have experienced trauma or violence.
- Flexibility in working hours.
- Problem solver and has strong ability to make quick decisions under stressful situations.
- Demonstrated strong ability to work as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to form relationships with individuals.
- Knowledge of community resources for homelessness, health, mental health and substance use.
- Demonstrated understanding of the unique issues and barriers affecting those experiencing poverty and homelessness.
- Good understanding of colonization and its impact on Indigenous peoples.
- Ability to work within a harm-reduction framework.
- Ability to work from a trauma-informed perspective.
- Highly developed understanding of and proven ability to communicate appropriate professional boundaries.
- A compassionate and empathetic outlook and ability to convey these characteristics in relationship with participants.
- Certification in or demonstrated knowledge of NVCI, ASIST, CRP/First Aid, Mental Health First Aid training (MHFA), Motivational Interviewing is preferred; Manitoba Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Completion (or obtained within 6 months of employment).
- Demonstrated computer competency and experience working with Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
- Able to effectively manage multiple tasks and inquiries.
- Knowledge and experience with Accuro.
- Strong skills for leadership.
- Self-directed and able to prioritize effectively to meet deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with strong critical thinking, organization and record keeping skills.
- Ability to be collaborative and work in team-based environments. Our laboratory has multiple collaborations with several organizations, national and international, with a strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Effective communication skills with clear understanding of cultural sensitivity.
