Registered Nurse (Pre-Operative Assessement Clinic)

About the role

OVERVIEW

Registered Nurses possess a defined body of advanced knowledge, clinical skills, and procedural skills and professional attitudes, which are directed to effective patient and family-centered care. In serving as the leader in a coordinated care model. Registered Nurses have a pivotal role in care planning, coordination and delivery and in ensuring high level functioning of the health care team. RNs apply both their clinical knowledge as well as their leadership skills to collect and interpret information, make appropriate nursing clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. Their care is characterized by up-to-date, ethical, and resource-efficient clinical practice as well as with effective communication in partnership with patients and families and other health care providers.

EDUCATION

  • Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario

  • BScN preferred

  • B.C.L.S.

  • Diploma Nurses must have a Recognized Recent (within 5 years) Patient Health Assessment course required but candidates will be considered if they are willing to take and complete a Patient Assessment course within six (6) months of their hire

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have two (2) years of recent surgical or ER nursing experience in the last 3 years -required

  • Previous experience in a Pre-Admission Clinic an asset

  • Demonstrated ability to interview patients (required)

  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical procedures

  • Demonstrated ability to educate patients about their upcoming procedure and assessing patients' understanding of expectations of surgical outcomes

  • Demonstrated understanding of Adult learning principles required

  • Strong communication skills required

  • Clinical expertise in Venopunture required

  • Demonstrated experience in obtaining ECG and ECG interpretation an asset

  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development

  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent written and verbal communication and effective interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and have superior organizational skills

  • Strong leadership skills and experience taking the lead in multi-disciplinary teams

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a highly skilled interdisciplinary team

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize critical thinking and problem solving

  • Demonstrated ability to participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements

  • Good work and attendance record required

  • Position is required to rotate to Day Surgery

  • Must be willing to work in all areas of the Surgery Health Service (skills & abilities considered)
