About the position The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Term 3-Year Appointment in Indigenous Educational Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning October 1, 2026. We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to First Nations, Metis and Inuit (FNMI) education grounded in respectful, ethical, and accountable relationships with FNMI communities. The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate, professional (Teacher Education) and/or graduate courses and contribute to the ongoing development of courses in Indigenous studies and Indigenous education. Qualifications We seek candidates for the Indigenous Educational Studies program with the following: A doctorate in Indigenous educational studies or related field. Those who demonstrate a deep understanding of lived experiences with Indigenous knowledge systems, community-based practice, Indigenous language(s), and Indigenous education will be viewed as possessing equivalent qualifications of a doctorate (for Ph.D. equivalency for Indigenous knowledges, see Note 1); Applicants may also be doctoral candidates in the final stages (ie. defense date set). Note 1: In determining a Ph.D. equivalency for Indigenous knowledge, consideration shall be given, but not limited to, the level of knowledge of the language and/or traditional customs including protocols, spirituality, traditions, practices, ceremonies, histories, and teachings of a particular group of Indigenous people or Peoples. This knowledge may have been acquired through lived experience; active and lengthy participation in Indigenous forms of self-determination and governance, cultural structures, and processes; and/or a careful study and reflection of their philosophical underpinnings. In most cases, acquiring this knowledge will have involved studying with an Indigenous Elder(s) or Traditional Knowledge Carrier/Keeper(s). The ideal candidate will demonstrate a sound ability to teach from an embodied and lived perspective, grounded in ethical, reciprocal, and accountable relationships with local FNMI communities. Candidates will demonstrate experience incorporating Indigenous approaches to teaching and learning (Indigegogy), such as circle pedagogy, land-based education, ceremony (where appropriate), and community-based teaching practices; Experience teaching/facilitating within an educational and/or Indigenous community context is essential. Candidates will have an active research agenda, or a clearly articulated plan to develop and sustain one, with a focus on Indigenous studies, education, and/or Indigenous research methodologies. Applicants will demonstrate knowledge of Indigenous research methodologies and Indigenous research ethics, including principles of relational accountability, reciprocity, respect, community engagement, and Indigenous data sovereignty. A record of community-engaged scholarship, program development, and/or educational initiatives that reflect meaningful accountability, reciprocity, and responsibility to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities is required. Candidates will provide evidence of contributing to Indigenization and reconciliation initiatives within educational institutions, Indigenous organizations, and/or community-based contexts which demonstrate their commitment to ethical, reciprocal, and accountable relationships. Candidates will demonstrate established relationships and connections with FNMI communities. Preference will be given to candidates who bring lived experience as an FNMI person and/or extensive, sustained, and community-recognized engagement with FNMI communities. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to appropriate cultural protocols, ethical engagement practices, and cultural distinctions-based approaches when working with FNMI communities. Candidates will possess proficiency with digital technology, online teaching and learning tools, and the willingness to engage in ongoing learning and professional development in this area. Candidates will demonstrate ability to support and mentor FNMI students, and to foster culturally safe, inclusive, and affirming learning environments, and engagement in, or support for, Indigenous language and cultural revitalization, where appropriate.
