Position Summary:

SEXUAL ASSAULT AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICES

Mandate:
Trillium Health Partners operates the regional program for the medical treatment of:

  • women and men 12 years of age or older who have been recently sexually assaulted
  • women and men 16 years of age or older who have incurred recent physical injuries as a result of domestic violence
  • children under the age of 12 who have reported sexual assault/abuse

Clients may access this 24-hour service through the Mississauga Hospital Emergency Department and are cared for by a specially trained nurse. A process of: assessment, treatment, documentation (may include photography), safety planning and referral is undertaken by the nurse in the safety and security of a private unit separate from the Emergency Department called Chantel’s Place.

Qualifications:

  • Registered in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) or currently meet the eligibility criteria to register in good standing in the Temporary Class or General Class with the CNO
  • Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training preferred
  • 2 years’ experience working with SA/DV clients preferred.
  • 2 years acute care nursing experience preferred.
  • Experience performing speculum exams, vaginal examinations and venipuncture preferred
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.)
  • Must be able to arrive at the hospital within 45 minutes
  • Willingness to provide a minimum of two years commitment to the program -
  • Committed availability for on-call roster, minimum of 48 hours a month on call coverage
  • Participation at a minimum of 50% of the internal monthly staff council meetings
  • Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, the needs of sexual assault/domestic violence survivors
  • Strong interpersonal skills combined with excellent assessment skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Preference given to bilingual practitioners
  • Ability to speak other languages an asset
  • Positive attendance and work record essential
