Job Summary Under the direction/supervision of the Fitness Supervisor/Special Needs Program Coordinator, the successful candidate will be assisting with a variety of individual and group activities including cognitive, social, recreational sport and therapeutic fitness programs. Responsibilities include program preparation, monitoring participants, participation in program planning along with additional administrative duties, all serving to contribute to the physical, emotional, mental and social well-being of Next Step to Active Living participants.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support objectives and goals of Next Step to Active Living program through quality instruction, supervision, documentation, and excellent customer and staff relations
  • Planning, implementation and evaluation of diverse and therapeutic-focused recreation programs to meet the needs of program participants.
  • Provide group activity instruction and supervision while effectively ensuring the safety of all participants.
  • Conduct safety checks of program equipment and allocated facilities daily.
  • Clean up and store equipment properly at the end of each day as required.
  • Maintenance of records and statistical data.
  • Effectively provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource to participants regarding activity options to encourage integration into the community when independence is reached.
  • Communicate immediately any issues/information that could impact the quality and/or safe delivery of the program to the Supervisor/Recreation Programmer or designate.
  • Participate in program quality Improvement initiatives as required.
  • Attend and participate in trainings, staff meetings, event planning and supervision of special events.
  • Complete all mandatory required e-learning/training modules and maintain all required professional qualifications.
  • Perform emergency procedures as required.
  • Read, understand and abide by all City of Mississauga program standards, policies and procedures as it relates to all programs.
  • Perform other related and program duties as assigned

Skills And Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will possess post-secondary education and/or degree or diploma in Kinesiology, Recreation Therapy, Gerontology or equivalent field of study and have 2 years minimum experience in a related environment or organizational setting with older adults and/or individuals with disabilities.
  • Candidates must have a fitness, aquatic or therapeutic certification or be willing to obtain a certification within 6-months. (Certifications and/or experience with fitness, aquatic or therapeutic programs an asset.)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is an asset.
  • Strong leadership skills and an ability to work both independently and in a team environment are essential along with excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Candidates must have the ability to apply knowledge and experience to cognitive, social and fine motor skills activities and programs. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Preference is given to candidates with additional experience in program development and evaluation and/or working knowledge of the provincial health care system health supporting networks.
  • Employment is conditional upon receipt of candidates Criminal Records Search, Vulnerable Sector Screening completed and acceptable to City of Mississauga and current CPR “B” and Emergency First Aid certification from a recognized organization (Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, St. John’s Ambulance or the Canadian Ski Patrol).

Hourly Rate/Salary: $22.78 - $26.58 - $30.38

Hours of Work: up to 24 hours/week
