The Calgary TELUS Convention Centre is looking to hire a full-time AV Specialist in the IT Department. Reporting to the Director of IT and Cyber Security, this position supports the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of audiovisual systems in a dynamic, collaborative environment. This role involves researching and coordinating with internal teams, external vendors, and visitors to ensure seamless service delivery and timely issue resolution through strong cross-functional collaboration and relationship management. Key responsibilities include AV installations such as cable pulling and management, rack setup, mounting projectors, TVs, and other equipment—including tasks that require working at heights. A solid understanding of signal flow across audio, video, lighting, and control systems is essential in providing overall support to the IT team, partners, and events.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and troubleshoot AV related issues relating to equipment, including audio, video, specialty lighting, and network systems and hardware.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks to help maintain a stable AV system and ensure a high level of service to end-users of equipment.
  • Anticipate service delivery needs and create business cases for operational and capital expenditure projects to meet evolving end-user requirements.
  • Support the Capital Improvements department by participating as a team member and AV subject matter expert in the initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and controlling and closing of capital expenditure projects.
  • Clean various AV equipment including but not limited to ceiling racks, amplifiers, and equipment fans.
  • Take responsibility to accurately complete and update job documentation as needed using new or already existing templates.
  • Maintain the inventory list for all built-in AV components including capturing equipment condition, life cycle, and replacement costs.
  • Perform tasks in a timely and quality conscious manner including but not limited to pulling cable, installing connectors, mounting projectors or tv's and hanging ceiling or wall mounts.
  • Update various other playback systems (Bright Signs, Raspberry Pi's, etc.).
  • Use hand and/or power tools to mount devices on walls, in kiosks, or in ceilings.
  • Adhere to and understand health and safety standards for all phases of a job.
  • Work closely with internal team and communicate effectively.
  • Triage and escalate to internal groups as required.
  • Respond to and troubleshoot AV technology helpdesk tickets (client and staff) in a timely manner.
  • Test point to point functionality of installed systems.
  • Coverage and support for the Digital Content Specialist.
  • Supports Director, IT and Cyber Security with other responsibilities and special projects.
  • Collaborate with teams to identify queries and work with the service providers to resolve them in a timely manner. Continue to develop a multi department procedural manual for AV modules and common troubleshooting processes.
  • In coordination with the IT and Facility Management teams, ensure all updates/upgrades are thoroughly tested for deficiencies and successfully rolled out.
  • Liaise with external and partner service providers to ensure high level of client experience.
  • Provides project updates and status reports to the project team and Director of IT and Cyber Security.
  • Performs detailed analysis and makes recommendations to resolve simple and complex problems relating to the AV software and hardware.
  • Work closely with IT, Facilities, and Event teams to ensure seamless AV experiences.
  • Stay current with AV technology trends and recommend upgrades or improvements.
  • Work evenings, weekends, or overtime hours as required to support exhibitions and special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Training

  • A formal degree in electronics or related field or equivalent experience in an appropriate discipline is preferred.
  • Certificates for Fall Arrest and Elevated Work Platform are encouraged but not required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • Medialon, Extron, and Biamp training or certifications
  • Avixa (InfoComm) CTS General Certification
  • AMX Intro to Networking for AV Professionals
  • Crestron Professional Installation
  • Extron AV Associate Certification
  • Dante Level 1 or 2 or 3 Certification
  • Experience with Lighting Systems

Experience & Requirements

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • 1-3 years of audiovisual integration experience preferred.
  • Hands-on experience and strong knowledge base of computer systems.
  • Understand how to correctly pull and wire manage all types of cables including ethernet, 16/2, 22/2, HDMI, and SDI.
  • Possesses the following personal qualities: integrity, creativity, high standards, commitment, ethical values, self-motivated and results-oriented.
  • Has a strong general A/V, computer, and network technology understanding.
  • Ability to manage small to medium projects.
  • Knowledge of best practices for installation and wiring of AV equipment.
  • Knowledge of stereo and mono audio termination.
  • Hands-on exposure to various A/V devices from an assortment of vendors such as Extron, Biamp, Panasonic, Lg, Christie, and BrightSign/22Miles.
  • The ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications to troubleshoot and maintain technical systems would be an asset.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Comfortable working at various heights, including on ladders or lifts.
