About the Role:
Reporting to the SVP HSEQ & Sustainability, the Environment Director is responsible for providing direction on daily Environmental focused operations and supporting the division, as well as for providing continuous improvement feedback to the SVP and corporate team on the effectiveness of the HSE MS, the Environmental focused aspects and elements, and subsequent change management. The incumbent represents Graham to the client on Environmental and associated regulatory requirement issues and works with regulatory bodies on a regular basis and is accountable for mitigating day-to- day issues as they arise and monitoring implementation of the Corporate HSEQ mandate. The incumbent ensures the division is meeting the Environmental business requirements and stays current on relevant federal/ state / province regulatory compliance. The Environment Director will support multiple divisions and have strong client relationships with Graham Leadership and government bodies.
Graham is seeking a strategic and experienced Environment and Sustainability Director to lead our environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives, and climate action strategy across all operations. This role is critical in driving our commitment to responsible development, regulatory excellence, and long-term environmental stewardship.
As a Director of Environmental and Sustainability at Graham, you will:
- Ensure compliance with applicable environmental legislation and project specific contractual environmental obligations.
- Provide active and visible leadership and promote environmental stewardship across all levels of the organization.
- Communicate environmental expectations to clients, internal teams, and workforce partners.
- Support Operational Management and Regional HSE Managers in applying environmental standards and practices on projects.
- Guide the development and implementation of site-specific and project-specific environmental management plans (EMP).
- Analyze environmental data to identify trends and recommend improvements or corrective actions.
- Lead or support investigations of major environmental incidents and contribute to emergency response planning.
- Assess and audit the implementation of environmental systems and standards to ensure continuous improvement.
- Monitor and report on environmental performance using Key metrics and performance indicators (KPIs).
- Ensure environmental considerations are integrated throughout all phases of project development, including pre-construction.
- Report on the effectiveness of environmental practices to Senior Operations and the HSEQ Senior Vice President.
- Collaborate with HR to recruit and evaluate environmental personnel.
- Collaborate with operations teams during project pursuits and execution to define environmental roles, responsibilities, and resource needs.
- Lead, implement and continuously improve the environmental portions of Graham’ Company-wide HSE MS. An ISO aligned management system that integrates health, safety and environment in one comprehensive and scalable management system.
- Lead the development and implementation of Graham; sustainability strategy and support the embedding of ESG programs into Grahams GMS
- Advise leadership on emerging environmental risks to the business, regulatory changes and sustainability opportunities.
- Represent Graham in industry forums, regulatory consultations and stakeholder engagement.
- Support operations in business development; specifically working with bid teams to identify environmental risks, develop mitigations and plans to ensure compliance during execution. This also includes identifying environmental scope of work and costing both time and materials to deliver the project successfully.
Qualifications/ Experience:
- Minimum degree Bachelor of Science, Environmental Studies or Environmental Engineering from an accredited institution.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in environmental management and sustainability, preferably in infrastructure, construction, or industrial sectors.
- Certification or eligible for certification in ISO 14001 auditing, Environmental Auditing or professional designation (e.g. P.Eng, P. Bio).
- Experience working in other geographical locations; experience in both Canada and the US is an asset.
- Strong understanding of federal/ provincial / state Environmental related regulations.
- Deep knowledge of Environmental and Waste regulatory reporting processes.
- Strong client relationship skills.
- Strong grasp of environmental construction practices and terminology.
Working Conditions:
- Most of the work is completed in the office, though regular travel is required.
- The role has the potential for work outside of normal hours.
