About the role
BMO Capital Markets is a leading, full-service financial services provider. We offer corporate and investment banking, treasury management, as well as research and advisory services to clients around the world. #bmocapitalmarkets
Build technology that accelerates climate impact. BMO Radicle is BMO’s climate technology and advisory business, helping organizations measure, manage, and reduce their environmental impact while navigating the transition to a low‑carbon economy. At the heart of this mission is ECAS , a core platform that supports environmental commodity and asset tracking, analytics, and reporting—enabling trusted, scalable solutions for carbon markets.
We’re looking for a Development Manager to lead the ECAS development team. This is a hands‑on leadership role for someone who is equally passionate about people, technology, and purpose . You’ll guide a talented team of engineers, shape technical direction, and ensure ECAS continues to evolve as a high‑quality, secure, and resilient platform.
What You’ll Do Lead and Grow a High‑Performing Team
- Attract, retain, and develop top engineering talent.
- Coach and mentor team members, enabling strong career growth and continuous learning.
- Foster a servant‑leadership culture - removing obstacles, providing clarity, and empowering the team to do their best work.
- Create an inclusive, collaborative environment aligned to BMO’s purpose, values, and commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Set clear goals and expectations, recognize strong performance, and address challenges constructively.
Own the Delivery of ECAS
- Drive the end‑to‑end software development lifecycle—from requirements to design, build, test, release, and support.
- Partner closely with business, product, architecture, and security teams to translate complex requirements into scalable solutions.
- Ensure adherence to release management standards, version control, and quality practices.
- Balance speed and quality while working toward the goal of defect‑free, resilient software.
Shape Technical Direction
- Lead solution design and make informed architectural decisions with an eye to performance, security, scalability, and long‑term maintainability.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, understanding their impact across systems, data, risk, and operations.
- Guide the team through complex design trade‑offs, offering creative alternatives when constraints arise.
- Promote reuse, common assets, and sound engineering practices across the ecosystem.
Stay Hands‑On Where It Matters
- Remain technically credible—reviewing designs and code, supporting troubleshooting, and guiding root‑cause analysis of production issues.
- Contribute to continuous improvement through automation, streamlined processes, and operational efficiencies.
- Support critical project deliverables and ensure successful outcomes.
Influence Beyond Your Team
- Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the Credit Development Service team and related portfolios for which ECAS serves.
- Provide trusted technical leadership and consulting on complex or strategic initiatives.
- Stay current on industry, technology, and climate‑tech trends and bring fresh ideas back to the team.
What You Bring Experience & Expertise
- 5–7+ years of relevant experience in software development and technical leadership (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Deep understanding of Agile development—using processes as enablers, not obstacles.
- Strong hands‑on technical background across the software development lifecycle.
- Ability to code with minimal oversight and confidently assess design and implementation quality.
- Solid understanding of modern development environments, deployment practices, and the broader ecosystem your software operates within (AWS Fargate/ECS2/RDS etc, Django, React)
- Experience in managing secure coding practices and implementing information security guidelines
Leadership & Mindset
- A people‑first leader who enables rather than commands.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with sound judgment in ambiguous or non‑routine situations.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence and align diverse stakeholders.
- Data‑driven decision maker who balances business outcomes, technical excellence, and risk.
- Strong interest in learning about carbon markets and the core areas of the business in order to more meaningfully participate in strategy development.
Why Join BMO Radicle?
- Purpose‑driven work: Build technology that supports climate solutions and sustainable finance.
- Real ownership: Lead a critical platform with visibility and impact.
- Growth and learning: Develop people, shape strategy, and deepen your technical and leadership skills.
- Hybrid flexibility: Balance in‑office collaboration with flexibility (minimum three days per week in Calgary).
If you’re excited about leading talented engineers, building meaningful technology, and contributing to climate solutions at scale, we’d love to hear from you.
