About the role

Paterson Grain is currently seeking a hardworking professional to fill the role of Assistant Commodity Trader. The Assistant Commodity Trader will support the grain merchandising team in executing purchase, sale and risk management strategies across Western Canada and global export markets. This role is designed for individuals with strong analytical skills, a keen interest in commodity markets, and the ability to build relationships with producers, customers and logistics partners. This position is designed as an entry path into commodity trading. Successful candidates will gain exposure to trading strategies with potential for promotion into trader and senior trader roles.

Responsibilities:

  • Trading and Merchandising Support:
    • Assist senior traders in daily market monitoring, pricing and execution of grain contracts;
    • Collect and analyze competitive bids, market spreads, futures and basis levels to identify trading opportunities;
    • Support in posting of country bids, generating flat price offers and hedging;
  • Country Location and Customer Engagement:
    • Maintain regular communication with country locations to understand crop quality, on-farm inventories, and marketing needs;
    • Provide timely market updates for customers;
    • Support relationships with end users and export customers by helping coordinate logistics, documentation and shipment execution. Act as backup for senior traders when away from the office;
  • Logistics:
    • Assist in in the coordination of logistics, country operations and rail partners to ensure timely grain movement;
    • Assist in troubleshooting and resolve contract execution issues;
  • Review invoices and ensure all receivables are collected;
  • Adhere to company policies and the highest ethical and professional standards; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Farm experience valued but not required;
  • Post-Secondary Degree in Business or Agriculture;
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills;
  • Excellent communication and relationship building abilities;
  • High level of initiative, adaptability and willingness to learn from senior traders;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in fast-moving markets
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office;
  • Knowledge of trading/risk management systems and futures markets is an asset.
