Its overall goal is to develop inclusive communities in which all Albertans can participate in the social, economic, and cultural life of the province without discrimination.   The Alberta Human Rights Act establishes the Alberta Human Rights Commission to carry out functions under the Act. The Commission is an independent Commission created by the Government of Alberta. The Commission has a two-fold mandate: to foster equality and to reduce discrimination. It fulfills this mandate through public education and community initiatives, resolution and settlement of complaints of discrimination, and human rights tribunal hearings.Role Responsibilities Are you an experienced lawyer ready to influence the future of human rights law in Alberta? The Alberta Human Rights Commission is seeking a strategic and highly skilled Senior Legal Counsel to provide legal leadership to the Chief of the Commission and Tribunals. This unique role offers the opportunity to shape policy, advise senior decision-makers, represent the Commission before the courts, and help advance fair, effective, and accessible human rights processes across the province.   Reporting directly to the Chief of the Commission and Tribunals, you will provide comprehensive legal advice and representation on complex human rights, administrative, employment, and litigation matters. You will support tribunal operations, contribute to policy development, provide legal guidance across the Commission, and help ensure the fair, effective, and legally sound delivery of the Commission's mandate.   Your key responsibilities include:

Providing strategic legal advice to the Chief of the Commission and Tribunals, Tribunal Chairs, and Commission leadership on human rights, administrative, employment, and related legal matters. Representing the Chief Commissioner and Tribunal in judicial reviews, appeals, and court proceedings, including preparing submissions and legal arguments. Reviewing and drafting tribunal decisions, legal opinions, policies, procedures, correspondence, and other legal documents to support sound decision-making. Supporting policy development, legislative interpretation, and the Commission’s response to emerging legal and human rights issues. Delivering legal education, guidance, and professional support to Commission staff, Tribunal Members, and leadership teams. Advising and engaging on public-facing initiatives, communications, publications, stakeholder relationships, and speaking engagements on significant human rights matters.

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (J.D.). Membership in the Law Society of Alberta, or the ability to obtain membership. A minimum of 10 years related legal experience or currently a Legal Officer 4. Experience working in the legal field of human rights.

  Preference will be given to candidates with the following:

Experience in administrative, labour and or employment law. Experience with judicial reviews, appeals and court advocacy. Knowledge of the law of evidence, and the Alberta Rules of Court. Experience providing strategic legal advice, supporting policy development and delivering education to diverse audiences.

There is one permanent position with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday This position is located at the John J. Bowlen Building in Calgary, AB. Final candidates will be required to undergo a criminal records check (CRC).
