Job Description

Fluor’s Mining & Metals business line is a leader in the study, engineering, and construction execution of complex projects world-wide. Our Vancouver office have designed and constructed marquee projects in locations across the world. We work with multiple major, and many emerging, mining companies, generally with a copper or gold focus. Our team is leading the market with efficient designs and developing new ways of adopting the many innovative technologies emerging in our sector, redefining the project delivery model for the next wave of major world projects. We currently have projects in BC, USA, Greece, Pakistan, Indonesia, Argentina and Chile.

Project Engineers work on multidisciplinary teams to plan and perform work requiring sound technical judgment in the evaluation, organization, and execution of project management assignments worldwide. The role of Project Engineer – Power Systems will be specifically focused on scope associated with power systems and distribution bringing demonstrated technical and execution experience to direct the work of others.

You would be responsible for activities including:

  • Performing basic project engineering functions involving monitoring of progress, preparation of procedures, documentation of communications and meetings, and identification/evaluation of project issues and problems;
  • Coordinating efforts of technical disciplines, vendors, and licensors to ensure integrated and complete designs that meet project requirements and contractual obligations;
  • Supporting enforcement and/or implementation of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) requirements and initiatives;
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines;
  • Reviewing project staffing requirements and coordinate staffing with supporting functional organization managers and/or subcontractors;
  • Supporting creation and coordination of overall project plans and schedules, and monitoring activities, progress, and milestones against the plans;
  • Supporting creation and coordination of project effort hours, and cost estimates and budgets, and monitor progress and cost performance against these;
  • Supporting the preparation, delivery, and coordination of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Job Requirements

  • Accredited four (4) year degree or global equivalent in engineering field of study;
  • Electrical background required (HV experience on 220kV/33kV substations and power lines);
  • Ten (10) years of experience in engineering, procurement, fabrication, and construction/construction management (EPFC/CM) industry including the performance of functional tasks on projects with a well-developed understanding of procedures and interfaces with the majority of the relevant experience on mining projects;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholder audiences that include but are not limited to management, co-workers, clients, vendors, contractors, and visitors;
  • Job-related technical knowledge necessary to complete the job;
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines;
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner.

Other Job Requirements

  • Responsible for managing the Fluor-designed portion of the electrical systems;
  • Responsible for defining and managing the E-room execution plan;
  • Responsible for the formation of the EPC/EPCM packages, evaluation, award and contractor management for the substation and power lines up to the start of construction;
  • Responsible for the procurement of key electrical equipment (specified by Fluor and EPCM contractor).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous successful performance in a project engineering position on a minimum of two (2) medium or large sized projects;
  • Previous successful performance in home office and field positions for development of mineral processing facilities or utility /infrastructure scope in remote locations;
  • Experience working on projects in international locations and diverse cultural environments is recommended;
  • Ability to develop and sustain productive customer relationships while meeting the company’s needs;
  • Ability to set and maintain high standards of performance with responsibility and accountability for successfully completing assignments and tasks;
  • Analytical approach to problem-solving and identifying potential solutions;
  • Technical and business writing and presentation skills;
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, accountability, and adaptability skills;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data-centric execution and familiarity with integrated software tools and databases;
  • Intermediate to excellent computer and software skills to include the use of word processing, email, spreadsheets, electronic presentations, and project management tools;
  • Mobility – relocating to site locations for continuity of leadership from home office to the field where necessary.

Compressed work schedule: The Fluor Canada offices work a compressed work schedule offering every second Friday off.

Salary is based upon experience. Salary Range: $111,000.00 - $215,000.00

The market rate for the role is typically at the mid-point of the salary range; however, variations in final salary are determined by additional factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
