The Charge Medical Laboratory Technologist – Transfusion Medicine provides technical, operational, and clinical leadership within the Transfusion Medicine service. Working within a team-oriented environment, the Charge Technologist supports the delivery of safe, accurate, and timely laboratory services by coordinating workflow, providing technical expertise, and promoting best practices in quality, safety, and patient care.
In addition to performing diagnostic testing within their scope of professional practice, the Charge Technologist is responsible for supporting staff development, quality management activities, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives within the discipline. The incumbent practices in accordance with the Medical Laboratory Technology Act, College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) standards, Accreditation Canada Diagnostics requirements, CSA Standards for Blood and Blood Components, Health Canada regulations, and Brightshores policies and procedures.
The Charge Technologist works collaboratively with Laboratory Management, the Chief Pathologist and Medical Laboratory Director, the Transfusion Medicine Pathologist Lead, physicians, nursing staff, and regional partners to support high quality Transfusion Medicine services across Brightshores Health System.
Qualifications
Degree, diploma, or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution in Medical Laboratory Technology, Science, or a related field Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification Minimum five (5) years of recent clinical experience in Transfusion Medicine with demonstrated progressive leadership responsibility Advanced knowledge of Transfusion Medicine, including transfusion practices, blood component management, transfusion safety, and applicable standards and regulations Demonstrated leadership skills, including coaching, mentoring, staff development, competency assessment, conflict resolution, decision making, and team development Demonstrated ability to coordinate workflow, prioritize competing demands, and support operational requirements in a fast-paced environment Demonstrated knowledge of quality management systems, continuous improvement methodologies, quality assurance, quality control, risk management, and inventory control principles Demonstrated knowledge and application of Accreditation Canada Diagnostics, IQMH, CSA Standards for Blood and Blood Components, Health Canada requirements, and applicable legislation Experience participating in laboratory projects, process improvement initiatives, validations, implementations, and optimization activities Strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills Proficiency with laboratory information systems and hospital information systems Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records, documentation, and regulatory compliance requirements Ability to work independently while fostering a collaborative team environment Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment Ability to manage exposure to infection, noise, odors, interruptions, and high pressure situations Ability to work all shifts, including weekends, standby, call-back, and multi-site coverage as required Recent satisfactory performance and attendance record Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, quality improvement, and service excellence Adherence to Brightshores’ Values; We Show Up for Each Other, We are Trusted to Act, We Create Solutions Together, We Strive for Better, We Share Accountability. Previous experience in a Charge Technologist, Senior Technologist, Technical Specialist, or equivalent leadership role Experience with blood inventory management and utilization initiatives Experience participating in accreditation activities, regulatory inspections, and quality audits Experience leading quality improvement, workflow redesign, or laboratory change initiatives Active participation in professional associations, transfusion medicine committees, or regional working groups Lean, process improvement, or project management training/certification
