Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Perform general building and grounds maintenance as directed by the Building Services Manager or designate.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Recognized training or education in two or more of electrical, mechanical, carpentry, welding, or plumbing required.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 6 months current related experience preferably in a long term care geriatric setting.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to work on 110v up to and including 600v systems and equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff, supervisor and residents.
  • Must have a good understanding and knowledge of the emergency procedures.

SKILLS

  • Must have a good attendance record.
  • A valid class "G" driver's license is required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • In accordance with the Corporate Criminal Record Check Policy, the position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Records Check and submit a Canadian Police Clearance Certificate.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Electrical:

  • Troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain various electrical components, appliances, and equipment in association with the P.M. (Preventative Maintenance) program and departmental procedures.

Plumbing:

  • Perform necessary work to keep drain lines clear.
  • Repair, remove, and replace plumbing fixtures, piping, and related equipment in association with the P.M. Program and departmental procedures.

Mechanical:

  • Perform mechanical and preventative maintenance work on equipment as per preventative maintenance manual and departmental procedures.
  • Make adjustments to and assists in the proper functioning of HVAC systems and boilers in conjunction with the Supervisor/Superintendent.
  • Clean ventilation and exhaust equipment.

General:

  • Operate Homes vehicle, as required to perform related errands to pick up necessary supplies pertaining to the Maintenance Department.
  • Perform snow removal, salting and grounds maintenance when required and operates related equipment.
  • Perform construction work, such as dismantling and erecting walls, finish carpentry work, pouring concrete, etc.
  • Assist in the set up of special functions, such as family day picnic, day at the fair, etc.
  • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures e.g., "Systems for Preventative Maintenance", "Maintenance Requisitions", scheduled work and Quality Assurance/Risk Management programs.
  • Assist in the training of new employees as required.
  • Contact outside contractors as required to initiate Home repairs.
  • Log in all work completed as per Preventative Maintenance manual.
  • Prepare, paint and decorate interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Keep abreast of and adapts to the ongoing changes and introduction of new equipment and technologies in the Home environment.
  • Make repairs to commercial laundry, dietary, resident care, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform the duties assigned in the event of an emergency or during the testing of emergency plans

Shift Information

Currently scheduled 0 hours, varied shifts and may be required to work days and evenings, including weekends. The incumbent may be required to work from any of the eight long term care facilities. Typically scheduled days 8:00-4:00 Monday through Sunday, subject to occasional afternoons as required.
