Position Summary

Reporting to the Fitness Coordinator, the Fitness Supervisor will provide strong leadership and expert guidance to staff by following the City's core values of Care, Collaboration, Courage, and Service. Under management direction, you will provide supervision, and coordinate daily department activities and ensure high quality fitness programs are provided to the community

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with the recruitment of qualified part-time fitness staff
  • Track and ensure all staff maintain current certifications by following up and ensuring they provide us with a copy
  • Conduct new staff orientation sessions, supervise staff and evaluate performance regularly
  • Schedule part-time staff; plan and organize part-time staff meetings
  • Respond to staff questions and concerns
  • Connect personal trainers with clients
  • Ensure coverage of fitness studios classes and programs and find replacements when required
  • Conduct fitness classes and work in the fitness studio in the absence of part-time fitness staff
  • Respond to all patron concerns and provide a high level of customer service
  • Assist with a marketing and promotion plan to encourage new members and maintain the existing membership
  • Maintain accurate inventory of supplies and equipment
  • Supervise operations at fitness studios and ensure all equipment is in safe working order and the facility is clean
  • Conduct municipal comparisons on membership fees, programming, operation times, staff wages, program fees and services provided
  • Responsible for sectional budget preparation and monitoring
  • In partnership with the Coordinator, create and recommend fitness programming that the City will offer each season
  • Assist in developing key content for marketing, promotions, and City webpages
  • Keep inventory of fitness equipment and aquafitness class equipment in multiple locations
  • Research and conduct price comparisons for equipment and service providers

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Personal Training certification or Certified Fitness Consultant, Fitness Instructor Specialist certification and Standard First Aid and CPR C is required
  • Post-secondary education in Recreation Leadership or a Fitness related discipline would be an asset, AquaFit Instructor certification would be considered an asset
  • 1 year experience in a fitness supervisory role with an emphasis on community recreation

Required Skills/Knowledge

  • Well organized, independent and highly-motivated, with the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities, set priorities, problem solve and work with all levels of staff
  • Knowledge of Active-Net and SAP systems is an asset
  • You also have demonstrated experience in coaching, team building and supervising and developing staff to achieve high levels of performance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications with a strong knowledge of Excel and Word
  • Dedicated to continuous learning of the Fitness industry
  • Demonstrated ability to independently resolve problems and issues under minimal supervision
  • Ability to work independently, combined with well-developed organization and time management skills and the ability to deal effectively with tact, courtesy, discretion and diplomacy with all levels of staff and the public
  • Office Environment with moderate physical effort required. Must be physically fit in order to maintain required technical certifications and move fitness equipment.
  • Irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and exposure to noise in the fitness studio.
  • Occasionally is contacted outside work hours to support part-time staff on site
  • Police Vulnerable Sector Check
