HDR is seeking a Civil Field Specialist to join our Transportation – Construction and Field Services team to work on construction projects in western Canada, based in Calgary. As this role is primarily construction-based field work, it requires working nights, weekends, and extended shifts. The work also tends to be seasonal in nature and as such, the successful candidate will also have the ability to work on projects in the office supporting the design or coordination under the project manager.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate daily diary entries to document construction progress and completion of contract documentation records
  • Maintain daily photographic records, and videos as necessary to document construction and site activities
  • Keep records of completed work for tracking bid items and material quantities for payment
  • Complete daily inspections in accordance with client requirements and established standards
  • Monitor that construction work is in accordance with contract documents and specifications
  • Monitor the contractor’s compliance with health and safety, and environmental regulations and legislation
  • Supervise and implement quality assurance acceptance and inspection of construction works
  • Monitor and report on construction progress in relation to a project schedule, noting any delays or impacts
  • Report to the Project Manager onsite activities, concerns, and non-conformances, and provide recommendations for resolution
  • Project coordination supporting project management and design teams
  • Liaise with client representatives, as required
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree/diploma in Civil Engineering and/or relevant on-site large infrastructure construction experience.
  • A minimum 5 years of construction field engineering experience.
  • Eligibility for registration as Certified Engineering Technologist
  • Demonstrated experience in construction and/or construction inspection of heavy civil infrastructure that may include highway, bridges, buildings or railroads
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime including nights, weekends and holidays to meet project schedules. Extended periods of travel and on-site remote work are expected, as necessary.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and schedule work.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Experience with GPS or Total Station Surveying considered an asset
  • Valid license with an acceptable driving record, and access to a reliable vehicle.

Required Qualifications

  • Requires high school diploma or equivalent. (Candidates with 8 years of relevant construction inspection experience may substitute experience for a high school diploma)
  • A minimum of 3 years experience
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word/Excel/Outlook)
  • Proven problem-solving and documentation abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
