TITLE: Financial Accountant (U25-194)
DEPARTMENT: Finance
WORK LOCATION/OFFICE: Calgary

DESCRIPTION:
Under the general direction of the Supervisor Financial Reporting, the Financial Accountant will be accountable for preparing and analyzing financial statements and reporting. Strong experience in public reporting, financial statement preparation, management reporting, and Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A) preparation are essential attributes for success.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):

Prepare and perform analysis on monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements, MD&A, and management reporting requirements, and ensure timely completion.
-
Liaise with external and internal auditors in performing audits and reviews.
-
Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and related analysis.
-
Implement new accounting standards as they relate to areas of responsibility, complete relevant research and documentation as required.
-
Assist in the design, review, and evaluation of internal controls.
-
Administer and perform controls over the financial reporting processes.
-
Document and perform analysis of current financial processes and design further automation in SAP.
-
Provide input and assist on regulatory applications and interpretation of regulatory decisions, specifically to those that impact the financial statement and MD&A.
-
Undertake studies, analysis, and research of various issues or topics.
-
Support the compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), tax or securities regulation, where applicable.
-
Support the finance team’s assessment of whether the Company continues to report under US GAAP by becoming a US Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) Issuer, or pursue adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Support data integrity of financial systems, by ensuring compliance to financial procedures and accounting guidelines.

Special projects and other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Strong verbal and written presentation communication skills including the ability to clearly present information to various audiences in both formal and informal settings.

Proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with team members and internal and external stakeholders.
-
Ability to apply sound professional judgment in determining the appropriate accounting or reporting methods in various situations, evaluating possible solutions and providing recommendations.
-
Excellent organizational and time management skills in order to manage multiple priorities and competing demands with tight timelines.
-
Proven ability to engage continuous improvement efforts to be as efficient as possible, enabling value-add analysis while maintaining workload.
-
Demonstrated knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and taxation regulations; US GAAP experience or knowledge; and an understanding in IFRA would be required.

Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills to perform independent analysis with attention to detail.
-
Proficient in using MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint) with advanced proficiency in Excel; familiarity with SAP would be an asset.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-
A post-secondary degree with a major in Accounting, Business, Commerce, or Finance plus a minimum of 5 years of accounting experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience must include:

Three (3) years of experience in financial statement and note preparation under IFRS or US GAAP, and/or
-
Three (3) years of experience in financial reporting with a public entity.

A Chartered Professional Accountant designation (CPA) is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-
Experience with Workiva and SAP would be an asset.
-
Experience working in a regulated environment, preferably within the electrical utility industry, would be an asset.
