The Role
Job Title: Business Development Specialist
Department: Business Development
Location: Canada (Edmonton area preferred)
Reporting To: Sales Manager
As a Business Development Specialist at BBE with subject matter expertise in international freight forwarding and/or customs brokerage, you will play an important role in supporting BBE’s operations and customer commitments. This position requires sound judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing conditions. In this role, you represent the BBE brand and business to the highest standards. You have a passion for service and business development. You are driven to seek out new opportunities and deliver commercial solutions to customers, driving healthy business growth. You enjoy working with customers to support their needs and establish lasting relationships. You will work harmoniously on sales development and performance to ensure sales are aligned with marketing and support a unified BBE brand message.
What You’ll Do
Portfolio & Territory Scope
- Provide subject matter expertise in international freight forwarding and/or customs brokerage for opportunities under the Business Development team, as needed.
- Perform BBE’s sales plan to include keep, attain, recapture and expand account management for a variety of lines of business and services offered at BBE, starting in the Alberta geographical region:
- International FF
- Customs
- Domestic FF
- Procurement
- Be continually looking for ways to expand to multiple lines of business.
- Promoting BBE's new features or lines of business, as and when they launch.
- New project kick-offs.
Sales Funnel & Outreach / Deal Activities
- Maintain and update all sales opportunities, stages, close dates, and activities in CRM.
- Maintain prescribed sales processes and behaviours that lead to results as per plan.
- Utilize commercial solutions for qualified customers, leading to closing.
- Develop a sales funnel of short, mid and long-term prospects that align with BBE’s ideal client (complex/sensitive/underserved).
- Gain access to customers through client referrals or by association.
- Provide Operations with clear and concise information related to client needs when quotes are required.
- Contribute to and participate in negotiations with customers and internal teams, including contract development, contract renewal and implementation, and rate or service fee development and implementation.
- Contribute to and share market intelligence: competitors, regulators, prospects, existing customers, vendors (suppliers/carriers), partners.
- Nurture and strengthen relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Carry out assigned responsibilities with accuracy, accountability, and urgency.
- Anticipate issues and contribute practical solutions before problems escalate.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external partners to support smooth operations.
- Ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and customer requirements.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with stakeholders.
- Support continuous improvement in how work is done.
Performance Targets & KPI Requirements
- Meet and exceed your annual business targets.
- Contribute to BBE sales and marketing plans and annual OKR development.
- Measurement of inputs and outcomes.
- Improvement of strategy and activity to continuously improve success rates.
- Participate in individual performance management and personal growth opportunities on a scheduled basis.
- Represent BBE with professionalism and integrity.
What You Bring
- Bachelor of Commerce, MBA or equivalent post-secondary degree preferred or equivalent professional experience.
- Structured sales training, such as Sandler.
- 5+ years of sales experience.
- Previous experience working in international freight forwarding and/or customs brokerage sales.
- Passionate and a strong understanding of sales and business development.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Strong analytics and problem-solving abilities.
- Results-oriented mindset with a proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets.
- Excellent organization skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
