In alignment with the vision of the UTM Academic Plan and its goal of offering a wide variety of EL opportunities to all undergraduate students, the Experiential Education Unit (EEU) launched the UTM Co-op Internship Program (UTMCIP) in Fall 2024. This program provides specialized professional development training and paid work-integrated learning opportunities for UTM students across a diverse range of academic programs, with plans for annual growth. Participation in the UTMCIP stream will allow students to explore career options, apply their academic learning in a professional context, gain valuable work experience, and build a professional network. We are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion and to designing programming that allows all students to meet their academic and career goals. UTMCIP enhances the academic experience across the Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities while complementing the strong diversity of curricular EL opportunities that already exist on our campus.
Reporting to the Director, Experiential Education & Community Engagement, the Associate Director, Employer Relations will develop and lead a team responsible for all external relations activities related to the UTMCIP, including building and maintaining relationships with new and existing employer partners, coordinating employer-focused events, overseeing job recruitment cycle operational activities, managing program policies and records, and recommending and implementing improvements in program design. The incumbent will provide effective management to the UTMCIP Employer Relations team and work closely with the Associate Director, Student Learning and Professional Development to ensure students are prepared to succeed and thrive in their work term opportunities, employment targets are met or exceeded, and that exceptional service is provided to students, employer partners and on- campus stakeholders. The Associate Director, Employer Relations will also work in coordination with other campus partners to develop and implement a national and international marketing strategy to position U of T as a top recruiting destination.
REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION: Must have a post-graduate degree (e.g., Master’s or higher) in a relevant field such as Higher Education, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related discipline that provides a strong foundation for success in higher education environments.
Experience At least 7 years’ full-time, relevant, progressively more senior experience working directly in support of students or individuals in career transition; Sales, service, and/or operational management experience, potentially within a recruitment or work-integrated learning environment; in depth knowledge of careers, jobs, workplace standards, recruitment and hiring practices; experience developing strategic business development plans, developing and implementing programs and events, relationship management and project management. Experience managing staff with a strong understanding of collective agreement administration and managing in a unionized environment.
Skills Ability to lead in a target-based environment. A good understanding of the student and employer market and managerial/leadership competencies. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills, with experience in training and presenting to a wide variety of stakeholders at all levels. Must have strong computer skills including the use of word processing, database management, spreadsheet, presentation software, as well as ability to adapt to and learn new technologies.
Other Proven ability to organize and handle a variety of projects, deadlines and schedules simultaneously under minimal supervision; take initiative and be creative in solving problems. Demonstrated behaviour that indicates personal commitment to innovation, teamwork, flexibility and integrity. Ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with individuals at all levels and build sustainable relationships. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Tact and diplomacy required when dealing with faculty, staff, students and employers. Proven commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion principles. Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle.
